At Maritzburg College, we believe that learners who show a high aptitude for mathematics should be given the opportunity to extend themselves. Through Advanced Programme (AP) Mathematics, we provide our boys with the chance to do this.
AP Maths is offered at Maritzburg College from Grades 9 to 12 on a voluntary basis on the part of the boys.
Grade 9 is completed via the AdMaths company, with lessons taking place at the school. There is a charge for this.
Grades 10 to 12 are free of charge, with lessons taking place during school hours and supported with all resources on the school Moodle, as well as full lessons being available on the Maritzburg College YouTube channel.
Grade 12 students are registered to write the Advanced Programme Mathematics exam with the IEB during October/November.
The syllabus includes a compulsory module involving:
- Pre-calculus algebra
- Differential calculus
- Integral calculus
Candidates are also required to write an exam within one of the optional modules, with Maritzburg College opting to offer the Statistics module. Useful aspects of the other modules are also taught at the Grade 10 level.
I am often asked by boys: “Where/When are we ever going to use this again after school?”
This is how I answer: Taking Maths develops a crucial set of life skills. It teaches us to…
- Choose the best approach to a situation
- Think critically
- Analyse information
- Make informed decisions
- Plan ahead
- Apply prior knowledge
- Interpret information
- Problem solve
- Reason abstractly
- Use tools appropriately
- Represent and explain
- Learn from mistakes
- Be precise
