Athletics at Maritzburg College

Athletics is a popular sport at Maritzburg College, with our boys regularly achieving outstanding results in a number of inter-schools meetings, both provincially and nationally. Whether it’s a boy’s main sport, or taken as an opportunity to increase fitness levels, athletics develops skill, speed and endurance.

Athletes compete in all the ASA League meetings held in Durban during the season, as well as the Clover Top 8 Invitational meeting, the Grey College/Oranje Girls’ High Invitational meeting, the Menlo Park Invitational meeting and the Hilton College Invitational meetings which are held annually and where our athletes achieve excellent results! Our awards are based on the ABSA points scale.

At Maritzburg College, we have full inter-house events too. Here our ten sporting houses compete in sprints, long-distance running, relays, shotput, discus, javelin, long jump, triple jump, high jump and tug-o-war. These are spirit-filled events with a high level of competition between the boys.

A number of high profile rugby players, such as Cedric Mkhize (Natal Sharks), Peter Grant (Stormers), Craig Burden (Natal Sharks) and Chad Erskine (USA), represented Maritzburg College in athletics. Our 2013 Athletics Captain, S Sishi, represented South Africa at the Beijing Olympic Games.

This popular sport takes place during the 3rd term at Maritzburg College.
