Squash at Maritzburg College

A growing number of boys make use of our on-campus squash courts to develop their skill, fitness and technique, all year round. Our boys play squash both socially and competitively, where they regularly excel against strong opposition in inter-schools and local leagues.

This relatively young sport was started at Maritzburg College in 1974 with the addition of two squash courts to the campus. Squash became an official school sport in 1976, with J Dancaster as the first Captain and School Champion. Mr CJ Esprey coached the team for several years, followed by Mr R van Heerden. Two more courts were added in 1983.

Squash is a popular and social sport that combines speed, skill and mental strength. The values one attains from squash can be translated into any avenue – whether it is another sport or simply the timeless attribute of commitment. The calibre of squash being played at College at the moment is very encouraging for the future.
