Swimming at Maritzburg College
Our well-established and successful swimming squads benefit from top-class coaching and facilities at Maritzburg College. The dedication to training shown by our swimmers means our squads thrive on competition and consistently strive to keep raising the bar.
We are very fortunate to boast an A and a B Swimming Squad at Maritzburg College. Our heated 30m swimming pool allows for pre-season training. With our swimming season being so short, focus is placed on starts, turns, stroke correction and speed work. Swimming training also takes place in the mornings, with each age group doing two morning sessions and two afternoon sessions per week.
Each year we host a number of inter-school galas and our annual inter-house gala is always an exciting and spirited event.
At the 2017 Annual Championship Gala, four long-standing records were broken – one of them a record previously set by OC and Olympic Gold Medalist, Darian Townsend.
- L Verwey broke the U17 100m Freestyle record of 49.0, previously held by K Armstrong (1979), with a time of 47.9. He then went on to break the U17 50m Butterfly record of 24.9, previously held by Darian Townsend (2001), in a time of 23.9.
- C van Heerden broke the U15 50m Breaststroke record of 29.8, previously held by D Nel (1994), in a time of 28.8. He also broke the U15 50m Butterfly record of 25.9, previously held by P Bees (2002), in a time of 25.5.
College swimmers participate in six or more galas in the first term. This includes the annual Top 10 in Durban and our away trip to JHB every two years. A good number of our swimmers also take part in the annual Midmar Mile.
The performance of Old Boy Darian Townsend at the 2004 Athens Olympics, and again in 2012, is definitely a highlight from one of our swimming legends. Townsend was swimming captain in 2002. He also competed in our special 150th race at the 2013 aQuelle Midmar Mile.
