Assembly 03 May: Start of Term 2

Start of Term 2

I trust that you all have managed to have a restful break and had the opportunity to relax and unwind with family and friends. Furthermore, that you and your parents have reflected on your achievements and academic progress for Term 1 and know where your focus needs to be for Term 2. A number of you sacrificed a significant portion of your holiday to attend various festivals around the country and I thank you and the staff for that.

Please continue to take them seriously and report any issues that you see or may have to your mentor, housemaster, psychologist etc

This weekend on Sunday 9 May we celebrate Mothers’ Day

“Things my mother taught me” – humorous comments by anonymous:

My Mother taught me LOGIC…”If you fall off that swing and break your neck, you can’t go to the shops with me.”
My Mother taught me TO THINK AHEAD…”If you don’t pass your spelling test, you’ll never get a good job!”
My Mother taught me TO MEET A CHALLENGE…”What were you thinking? Answer me when I talk to you…Don’t talk back to me!”
My Mother taught me HUMOUR…”When that lawn mower cuts off your toes, don’t come running to me.”
My Mother taught me how to BECOME AN ADULT…”If you don’t eat your vegetables, you’ll never grow up.
My mother taught me about GENETICS…”You are just like your father!”
My mother taught me about the WISDOM of AGE…”When you get to be my age, you will understand.”
My mother taught me about ANTICIPATION…”Just wait until your father gets home.”
My mother taught me about RECEIVING…”You are going to get it when we get home.”
And my all-time favorite – JUSTICE…”One day you’ll have kids, and I hope they turn out just like YOU — then you’ll see what it’s like.”

As Sunday is Mother’s Day, I thought that it would be appropriate to focus on ‘What Mothers want from their sons’ and this is what I found:

WHAT DO MOTHERS WANT FROM THEIR SONS?

For you to be:

  • Truly happy & safe
  • To have close, decent friends & to treasure friendship
  • Proud of yourself & to build esteem in others
  • Have a zest for life & an enthusiasm for ensuring that you extricate the marrow from the bone of life
  • Offer deeper answers than ‘Ok’ & ‘fine’ to questions and to have a decent conversations
  • To write your own words in the ‘Mother’s Day Card’
  • To give your mom a heartfelt hug to show that you love her
  • To spend quality time with her
  • To show her genuine attention
  • To do Random Acts of Kindness e.g. make her a cup of tea, coffee, pick a rose from the garden,…

Make sure you do something special for your mother this Sunday.

SPORT

Our boys excelled in the various sporting events and festivals held over the holiday. Details of all the results are here.

This weekend our winter sports programme begins in earnest as we travel to DHS to play our longest traditional rivals in rugby and hockey. A number of the games including the 1st XV and 1st XI will be live streamed. Links for these games and others will be provided for those of you who cannot be there.

NO Spectators [parents] are permitted at any of the fixtures throughout the country and there is NO exception to this regulation. However, participants , that is the players and officials will be permitted to watch the games up to a max of 500 in total. Your coaches and managers will provide all instructions in this regard closer to the time. Therefore, the norm of all staying to watch when we travel away or when we play at home will not be possible at this stage.

This is a fixture we look forward to and it is a wonderful opportunity to measure ourselves against our oldest rival. It is essential that we travel with the intention of doing our best and have a positive mindset. You need to ensure that you are at practice from today and give 100% at practice as well and ultimately enjoy what is a very special and unique occasion. A reminder that you are committed to your academics, sporting programme, Cultural activities etc and that you meet all requirements of that particular code, subject or activity. Failure to turn up and give your best is unacceptable.

Have a growth mindset be prepared to learn and change if you have to – have an open mind.

I wish you all a very successful and enjoyable T2.
