Boys’ Focus Group Fathers Day Message
Father’s Day Message
Fathers’ Day is a celebration honouring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. This day is observed across the globe on different dates. In South Africa, we celebrate Fathers’ Day on the third Sunday in June. Not only does this day provide the opportunity to celebrate fatherhood and honour fathers, but wonderfully, it gives occasion to express appreciation to those “father figures” who play such a vital role in society. This fathering role extends, therefore, to grandfathers, uncles, big brothers, and any male guardian. It is customary in certain cultures to encourage children to give cards, gifts and/or flowers to their fathers and families usually plan to spend time together.
It is a day on the annual calendar that affords us the opportunity to reflect on and appreciate the role a father-figure plays in the lives of others and to express our appreciation and love to these men. There are many people out there who are without fathers, but sometimes, fortunately, a caring relative or friend steps up to the plate and “fathers” them. To those mothers who have taken on this role, we salute you.
There are plenty of reasons to feel glad to have a father, one of which could be for the unique perspective that fathers bring. Many people can vouch for the fact that, without their father, life would not have been as beautiful. As fathers, we cannot always remove the hard times and harsh realities of life, but we inspire you to recognise the transformative power your input has, that even in the worst of circumstances, your love and support, positive mental approach and strength to persevere, can make life beautiful for your children. Somebody rightly said that, “The greatest gift I ever had, came from God; I call him Dad”.
I conclude with a famous saying by Jim Valvano, well known US College & NC State Basketball Coach and broadcaster: “My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person, he believed in me.” Valvano in the 1993 ESPY Speech reflected on the heritage he received from his father and highlighted a full day will be one in which we laugh, think and reflect, and are emotionally moved. In his speech to the 1983 NC State Team, he highlighted: faith in God; the need to have hope in adversity; to be inspired to work hard in order to achieve goals and pursue dreams; and to love each other. The greatest gift therefore a father gives his children is to share an unwavering faith in God, encourage them to persevere and value a strong work ethic, hold up through hope in spite of adversity, and to demonstrate unconditional love.
Wishing you all a blessed Fathers’ Day,
