College’s 158th Birthday

Celebrating our School’s proud history

As many of you will recall, this week  on  2 March, College celebrated its 158th birthday.

At our house assemblies, the housemasters read out a short message congratulating College on reaching this milestone.

As your headmaster, I think it would be remiss of me not to personally acknowledge the fact that our old school marks yet another year added in its long and distinguished history.

Great schools, wherever they might be in the world, have always played a leading role in the lives of their pupils and past pupils that goes way beyond the actual academic teaching that takes place in a classroom (which of course remains of the utmost importance).

The ability of a fine and noble school like Maritzburg College to guide, mould and inspire the character development of its scholars is perhaps even more important today than it has ever been.

So, as we honour our school this week on its 158th birthday, let us also forever be mindful of the guiding and inspiring role it plays in all our lives – you Collegians, the thousands of Old Collegians around the world, and even us, the staff.

I am proud to be the headmaster of this, the oldest boys’ school in KZN, and I’m delighted to lead the school community in wishing College a happy birthday for tomorrow.

But I am only too mindful that the sturdy, red-bricked “Old Walls” of Maritzburg College stand for so much more than the academic excellence we celebrated only last week.

I urge you to remember that too – today, tomorrow and always.

Please join in by applauding all those who have gone before to make College the wonderful institution that it is.
