Music at Maritzburg College

Although music has always been well-loved and supported at Maritzburg College, since the establishment of a formal Music Department in 2014, the programme has served to further the boys’ opportunity to learn, practice and participate in the creative musical process.

Under the leadership of Ms Mary-Ann Hartley, the Music Department was established and has since grown from strength to strength. Following the retirement of Ms Hartley, the department is now under the leadership of Mr Simon Stickells.

A wide range of musical instruments and teaching is on offer within the department. Mr Jacques Heyns is the resident subject music teacher, who boasts a broad range of musical knowledge and is a pianist and organist ‘par excellence’.

It is offered as a subject in Form 4 to Form 6, however, we encourage students to begin their musical studies from Form 2, as to be able to achieve a pass in Form 6 requires at least a grade 5 by the time they are in 6th form.

Our Music Department has a strong tradition of choral music and boasts two choirs. The Gospel and School Choirs perform regularly across the Pietermaritzburg, Midlands and Durban areas. We also encourage students to form their own vocal groups and to perform. All interested students are encouraged to sing in the school choirs to develop their voices and musical understanding.

In 2016, the Music Department formed the Jazz Band. Filled with a keen group of music students, this ensemble allows them an outlet for their musical talents and offers the opportunity to develop their ensemble and performance skills.
