SOPHIATOWN
The cast of Sophiatown have been hard at work in rehearsals and workshops since February. The production includes learners from Alexandra High, Carter High, Chistlehurst Academy, Epworth High, Girls’ High, Grace College, Russell High and Voortrekker High. This collaboration has allowed College to afford learners from a diversity of schools to be involved in live theatre after almost 30 months.
Sophiatown was referred to as ‘The Chicago of South Africa’ and was known not only for its musicians, artists, writers, gangsters, fahfee runners, shebeen queens and overcrowding, but also for its relentless energy and optimism.
The hub of South Africa’s cultural vibrancy and multi-culturalism, Sophiatown, was home to cinemas, the American culture, jazz, Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, Dolly Rathebe, Don Mattera, and George Mbalweni aka Kort Boy. It was the place where artists, musicians and writers flourished against all odds.
It is against this backdrop that the Maritzburg College Dramatic Arts Department in association with Dalro is privileged to present the acclaimed play, SOPHIATOWN, by Junction Avenue Theatre Company as a major school production for 2022. Bookings open at the start of Term 2. Details are as follows:
