Supporting the Education Employment Initiative
College is proud to host 10 EEI candidates in 2021
In an endeavour to improve the scourge of youth unemployment in South Africa, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) has introduced the Education Employment Initiative (EEI).
This Initiative seeks to provide temporary 4 month employment of young people who are 18 to 35 years old and who will in turn provide support to teachers in the classroom and the school in general. Unemployed youth from within the community who are not currently in training or studying and who fulfil the requirements were eligible to apply for the positions of Education Assistant and General School Assistant. Education Assistants are not teachers, but they are administrators who will provide support to and work under the supervision of a teacher. The Education Assistants will not be entrusted with teaching responsibilities. Applicants who are unemployed but who have a teaching qualification as well as other graduates were given preference for these positions.
After interviewing a number of applicants, 10 young people were appointed to these positions at Maritzburg College from 1 December 2020. A process of induction and training will be carried out, to ensure that they are not only an asset to the school but that they also will have gained skills and experience that will be of advantage to them in seeking future employment.
