Ideal Traits of Positive Masculinity
Following on with this theme after Craig Wilkinson’s address we need to revisit what are the ideal character traits of masculinity are.
He believes we should consider the following:
- A true man has a True North – a man has a sense of his value system. He knows what he stands for. I stand for this and if something comes along to pull me off my course I am not going do that.
- He uses his strength well . ‘What do I do with that strength?’ How you use that strength determines what kind of man you will become.
- Men are conquerors. They don’t conquer and overcome other men. They don’t conquer and overcome women. They conquer and overcome themselves.
- True masculinity treats women very well. A true man treats a woman with tremendous respect.
- Finding your masculinity is about being authentic. You see every one of you is a very unique individual and quite different. Knowing who you are
CONCLUSION:
- Know that you are enough
- Establish good habits now: physically, mentally, spiritually and relationally
- Be a good mentor to somebody else
- Be real
- Be vulnerable
- Make the world a better place
“Try not to become a man of success, but rather to become a man of value.” – Albert Einstein
As we approach the end of what has been a very long term and we look at character traits of what positive masculinity might be , it would be appropriate to self-reflect by looking at oneself honestly ‘in the mirror’ as it were and reading the poem ‘The Man in the Mirror’ by a father for his son
This also refers back to the very successful Dads n Lads evening we had last week
“The Man in the Mirror’
When you get what you want in this struggle for self,
And the world makes you king for a day,
Then go to your mirror and look at yourself,
And see what the man has to say.
For it isn’t your father, your mother or friend,
Whose judgement of you – you must pass,
The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life,
Is the guy’s staring back in the glass.
He is the man you must please – never mind all the rest,
When the man in the glass is your friend.
You can be like another and chisel a plum,
And think you’re wonderful guy,
But the man in the glass says you’re only a bum,
If you can’t look him straight in the eye.
You can fool the whole world, down the pathway of years,
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But your final reward will be heartaches and tears,
If you’ve cheated the man in the glass.
