Assembly 17 May: Focus on Wellness & Well-being

Focus on Wellness & Well-being

Taking care of one’s heart and the value of a good heart

  • A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. ( Proverbs 17:22)
  • Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. ( Proverbs 4:23)
  • Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up. (Proverbs 12: 25 ]

The theme for this week’s character education programme is Wellness /Well-being and Bullying, and follows on from last week’s focus which was one of respect. Looking at incidents that occurred last week, it is disappointing that boys did not take on board a topic that you have always felt very strongly about, especially seniors, namely respect.

“Bullying is not a reflection of the victim’s character, but rather a sign of the bully’s lack of character”

Following on from last term’s wellness survey, housemasters will meet with boys who have been named as bullies and they will be warned.  If involved after that, boys will be suspended and appear before a disciplinary committee. There will be NO form of intimidation, physical abuse , verbal abuse etc from older forms or your peers whatsoever on our campus. There are NO exceptions.

It is simple gentlemen; get on with your lives and focus on your academics, sport and other activities that are positive, and respect yourself, your peers, your school and one another. It is after all, a significant  part of our College Credo , Core Values and ultimately our DNA

The focus in the character education lesson on Wednesday with the various forms is as follows:

  • F2: Verbal bullying [most common form of bullying amongst boys]
  • F3: Physical bullying
  • F4: Emotional bullying
  • F5: Bullying in general and hazing. (Hazing is a ritual that involves risk, pain, or harm, typically as part of initiation into a group. It could also involve excessive alcohol consumption and ritualized pain endurance.)
  • F6: As the seniors and ultimate leaders of the school should be protecting their peers and younger formers to ensure that they are not being bullied in any respect and ultimately protecting them – that’s what good leaders should do and is an example of what an authentic brotherhood really is.

STAFFING UPDATE

It is my pleasure to announce the following staff changes. We welcome two new staff and one internal appointment;

  • Mrs Jenny Baptista assumes duty today as the Database Administrator/Donor Liaison in our College Business offices
  • Ms van Greunen assumes duty today as an assistant sister to the team in the Sanatorium
  • Mr Graeme Stewart has been appointed as Assistant Housemaster: Forder.

WEEKEND SPORT:

Full details of our sport from the weekend are found here.

I wish to compliment everyone; boys and staff, who were involved in sporting fixtures on Saturday, for the positive manner in which they conducted themselves, abiding by all the Covid regulations. If we continue to do so and remain cautious and safe outside of school, we are hoping that these activities, which are such an important part of College, can continue. We need your support.
