Assembly 24 May: Leadership

Theme: Leadership

Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others. ‘ Jack Welch

This week we are focusing on aspects of leadership, as we begin the process of nominating, electing and appointing leaders for 2022 from the current 5th Form cohort. There have been numerous meetings following on from last year’s election and amendments made to the process which will be shared by Mr Sparrow , HOD Leadership in the coming days . The process will continue to be thorough and transparent, in order to appoint the leaders who will serve you as the student body of College.

‘A good person leaves an inheritance.’ Proverbs 13:22

Leadership expert Dr John Maxwell writes: ‘On December 18, 1998, I had a serious heart attack. That night as I lay on the floor waiting for an ambulance, I remember thinking two things: First, I was too young to die. Second, I had not completed some of the things I wanted to accomplish… One of the most beneficial outcomes of my heart attack experience was that it motivated me to ask myself, “What will my legacy be?”

A legacy is something we leave behind to the next generation.

It can be principles we lived that carry on beyond our lives.

It also can be people we have influenced whose lives are better as a result of knowing us.

Our leaders of 2021 are currently in the process of creating a legacy as they go about their daily tasks in leading College in all the various aspects of College life. It sis something I talk about to the prefects especially and ask them the following questions as they assume office:

  • How will the 2021 Prefect body be remembered ?
  • How do you wish to be remembered ?
  • What will your legacy be? “

Whether one likes it or not leaders will be remembered. It is one of the questions often asked of a College boy: Who was a prefect who had an impact on you and why?
And it is interesting to hear their comments…

Leaders will leave a legacy. What will that legacy be ?

As we now move into leadership application process, consider the following leadership qualities:

  • Authenticity Be yourself, and act in line with your core values and personality. People will notice if you are trying to be someone other than who you really are.
  • Courage. Willingness to take risks on new ideas may put you “out there” for criticism and blame… but it also carries the reward of bringing new ideas to fruition. You also need to be able to stand up and be counted to do the right thing.
  • When you’re willing to share credit with others, and you’re willing to admit that you’re not perfect, others see that and appreciate it.
  • People trust you when your attitudes, words, and motives align with what you actually choose to do. This includes being honest about mistakes, refusing to gossip and shift blame, and doing things the ethical way.
  • Self confidence. Your self-confidence and calm demeanour can help others feel more certain that they, too, can overcome hurdles or reach a challenging goal.
  • Emotional intelligence [EI]. A solid leader exhibits empathy towards others, has a good understanding of emotions – both others’ and their own – and recognizes that their own mood can have an effect on the entire organization’s performance.
  • Enthusiasm, optimism, and warmth. Staying positive, being approachable, and expressing positive thoughts and feelings through both verbal and nonverbal communication help you build rapport with those around you.
  • Sense of humour. Your ability to make people laugh can help others feel comfortable and relieve tense situations.
  • -Leaders show an extremely strong commitment to and enthusiasm about their work.
  • Flexibility and adaptability. A leader can bring about change… so it follows that he or she must also be ready and willing to adjust to different settings and situations.
  • Internal control. Strong leaders take responsibility for events and believe that they can have an effect on outcomes and conditions.

Take time to consider these aspects carefully when electing your leaders for 2022.

WEEK AHEAD:

At the moment you aware that interschool sport, certainly as far as contact sport is concerned, has been stopped. We are still in the process of establishing exactly where we stand as a school, and normal sports practices etc continue until further notice.
