GUEST SPEAKER

It gives me great pleasure to introduce Ms Gisele Aymes, editor of Longevity, to address the school on the topic of Why We Have To Keep Talking About The Climate Crisis.

Gisèle Wertheim Aymés is a graduate of the University of Witwatersrand. Her professional career covers leadership experience within corporate and entrepreneurial environments. She has held senior general management and board positions for both listed, unlisted and non-profit organisations. After graduating Gisèle went straight to work and established a career in the media industry. She found her way to Times Media Ltd, where she stayed for 15 years. She has launched and re-launched more than 12 local and international media brands including titles such as ELLE and ELLE DecorationLongevity, 442 and Stuff Magazines, both locally and internationally. In 2008, she joined First National Bank as their Head of Media. FNB is considered Africa’s most innovative bank. During her time at FNB, she launched FNB onto Twitter and Facebook, ensuring FNB became the first bank in South Africa to engage socially with its customers. She also spearheaded an innovative new digital media approach enabling the bank to effectively engage their customers on their banking platforms.

Giselle joins us today to do a presentation on behalf of the Social Awareness Council focussing on issues concerning the environment and environmental justice.

In her address, Ms Aymes highlighted how the health of the planet is very much linked to the health of people. It’s up to us to take action and secure the future of the planet. In many cases, the rapid rate of technological advancement, while giving us an improved quality of life, places the environment around us at risk. As our planet becomes warmer and displays more climate extremes,  the imbalance between humans and nature is accentated, with potentially very serious consequences. Change begins with us…

While sharing some enlightening video footage, Ms Aymes challenged the boys to consider quite radical interventions to the climate crisis… – like eating less meat and more plants. She also encouraged them to educate themselves more about climate change.

(Ms Aymes’s presentation and the full assembly recording will be made available shortly)

WEEK AHEAD

Covid numbers continue to increase. Please ensure that you are abiding by the regulations all the time, not only at school, but at home as well.

Control tests commence next Monday and we want to ensure that ideally you can all write them, as you missed out on this experience last year. It is very NB that you write these test under exam conditions. In that regard, if you are unwell you will require a doctor’s certificate if you miss any assessments. I wish you all well for these tests.

School closes tomorrow and there will be work set in preparation for the tests on Thursday and Friday on MS Teams.
