Sport Update

The Department of Education have allowed schools to return to sport and cultural activities this term.

In Term 3, College will be running a normal sport programme as well as continuing some of the Winter Programme as well. The majority of schools in KZN that we play sport against are all running differing programmes – this affects what sport we can do and how many teams we can have, as finding fixtures for all teams depends on what all the schools are doing.

We will be continuing with some Rugby and Hockey – as a modified programme. Only 3 other schools are still playing Rugby and only with a limited number of teams, and for Hockey, only 1 other school is still playing and only at A team level. This means that Rugby and Hockey will not be able to cater for all the boys wanting to play. The Soccer programme will be offering more teams as most other schools are playing Soccer this term.

At the end of this assembly – all Rugby, Hockey and Soccer teams from Term 2 had a brief meeting. To meet with coaches about choices for Term 3.

Please note the following about sport this Term:

  1. Cross Country, Canoeing, Squash, Golf, Shooting, Cycling, Tennis, Athletics, Chess & Table-Tennis will be offered on the normal days: (Juniors on Tuesday and Thursday & Seniors on Monday and Wednesday.
  2. Rugby
  • Rugby will only be fielding A-D teams: 1st-4th, 16/15/14 A-D.
  • At this stage, there will 3 more rugby fixtures; against Northwood at home, Glenwood (home and away), some teams against Hilton and potentially some filler fixtures as well.
  • There will also be a three week 7s programme vs other schools as well
  • All Rugby players from Term 2 (regardless of whether you are playing this term must report to the meeting after assembly)
  • Hockey
  • Only the 1st, 16A & 14A teams will continue with some fixtures this term.
  • However, the Hockey Department will be running a College 5s Super Hockey League. That is 5-a-side played at the AB Jackson Astro and run internally.
  • The League will be a full competition format with prizes at the end etc. So will be fun and competitive for boys involved who still want to play hockey but not in the A teams.
  • Any hockey players interested from Bs-F teams can sign up. Teams will be drawn up by Mr Jones so skill levels are comparable.
  • There is space for 31 juniors and 31 seniors in the 5s competition.
  • All Hockey Players from Term 2 (regardless of this term) must report to the hockey meeting after assembly).
  • Boys wanting to sign up for the 5s competition will also do this at that meeting.
  • Soccer
  • Soccer teams will now accommodate 4 teams in each age group. 1st-4th/16/15/14A-D.
  • Fixtures will be played against opposition schools. These fixtures were already drawn due to the normal soccer season being in Term 3.
  • All soccer teams from Term 2 must report to the Soccer meeting after assembly.
  • Boys wanting to sign up for the other Soccer teams must also go to the Soccer meeting.
  • Boys who played Hockey/Rugby in Term 2 must still go first to the hockey/Rugby meeting to tell those coaches they are no longer playing rugby/hockey and then must report to the Soccer meeting to sign up.

Note to the 6th Form:

  • Participation in Term 3 sports is optional for you given that Trial exams are imminent and many of you may wish to only prepare for those. However, 6th Formers are urged to continue with their sport – especially those in top teams and those wanting to still represent College – especially when your opportunity to do so has been so limited over the last 2 years. It is always good to take a break from studying anyway. 6th Form must note though – that once signed up, you must commit to the programme.

Summer Sport

A full Summer Sport Programme of Basketball, Cricket and Water-Polo will start on the 18th September and into Term 4. This obviously includes all the year-round sport codes as well.

Whilst Covid is still amongst us – sport will adhere strictly to the guidelines given to us by the various departments…. So please make sure you all follow the instructions given by staff and coaches at all practices/matches.
