THEME OF THE WEEK: INTEGRITY

Watch the recording our assembly here courtesy of CollegeTV (DigiTV)

From Scripture:

‘Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out.’ Proverbs 10:9

‘Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is crooked in his ways.’ Proverbs 28:6

‘The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.’ Proverbs 11:3

‘The righteous who walks in his integrity— blessed are his children after him!’ Proverbs 20:7

A prayer

Lord, grant us the peace of mind that you are always there for us,
to help us make sound informed decisions in all that we do, with your guidance and blessing.
Amen

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;
Thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
Lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
Amen.

INTEGRITY

What do we understand by the term ‘INTEGRITY’?

When used as a virtue term, ‘integrity’ refers to a quality of a person’s character’.
The word “integrity” stems from the Latin adjective integer (whole, complete).  In this context, integrity is the inner sense of “wholeness” deriving from qualities such as honesty and consistency of character.

Oprah Winfrey says the following on integrity:
“Real integrity is doing the right thing , knowing that nobody’s going to know whether you did it or not.”

As such, one may judge that others “have integrity” to the extent that they act according to the values, beliefs and principles they claim to hold.

Integrity is the virtue of practicing what one preaches. Or more importantly, practicing what one believes is right.

Integrity is choosing your thoughts and actions based on values rather than on personal gain.

A ‘man of principle’ is not a man who understands a principle, but a man who understands, accepts, and lives by a principle.

There are many reasons why integrity is a virtue.

  • The first and most important reason to practice one’s beliefs is that if they are right, you will be benefiting your own life.
  • The second reason to practice integrity, is that it is an affirmation that your ideas benefit your life.
  • A third reason to practice integrity is in dealing with others. A person who practices what he preaches is predictable, and few will feel threatened by it. Trust can develop, since others will come to realize you are consistently virtuous.
  • To act without integrity, even occasionally, will leave others distrustful. This can negatively impact one’s life in a number of ways. People won’t allow themselves to become emotionally close to you. They will fear that you may betray them.
  • Knowing when to walk away is WISDOM
  • Walking away, with your head held high is DIGNITY
  • Being able to do the right thing at times may take immense COURAGE
  • Walking away, with your head held high is DIGNITY

So at all times strive to act with integrity.

MEMORIAL SERVICE : MRS LOWE

I wish to acknowledge the whole school on the manner in which you all abided by the request by Mr Talke to honour and respect former staff member Mrs Lowe’s memorial service. The respectful manner in which you did this, as well as all the participants in the service, made us all immensely proud of what is unique about College, and the positive association of what a genuine brotherhood and respect is. Thank you for honoring Mrs Lowe is such a respectful manner with passion and empathy.

SPORT
Hockey:
Our 1st XI played a return fixture vs Glenwood on Saturday and had a convincing 5-0 victory on Papes. Well done to the coaches and boys on their efforts. Thank you to all the boys who came out to support the 1stXI. I am certain that spurred the team on.

Rugby:
This week we announced the boys selected for the U16 Grant Khomo, Academy and U18 Craven Week teams. Details of these boys can be found here.

This is the largest number [7] of representatives in the Craven Week since 2003
Congratulations to all the players and coaching staff – we wish them well for their fixtures at the end of term.

The 2nd and 1st XV played against Glenwood away last Saturday. The 2nd XV lost 10-30 after putting up a sterling defensive effort in the first half,  but appeared to run out of steam in the second half . They will no doubt bounce back this week on Goldstones.

The 1st XV under the leadership of Thunder put in an incredible, passionate and determined performance to win 20 -10 for the first time at Glenwood since 2006 – 15 years since College tasted victory! An outstanding effort by the whole team considering the tough week we as a school experienced.
