We have come to the end of what has been another tumultuous year for all concerned, from dealing with the continuing impact of Covid-19 variants and the enormous impact on the wellness of staff, boys and parents through to the riots and protest in July. The year culminated with the Annual Prize-Giving for the 2nd to 5th Form boys on Friday 3 December. Our Guest of Honour was Mr Keith Guise-Brown, long serving former Senior Deputy Headmaster, who retired at the end of 2019. In his address, Mr Guise- Brown reminded the boys of College’s indestructible heart which continues to beat life into the hearts of every College boy despite the many challenges faced this year. He encouraged the boys to be resilient, and to reflect, regroup and emerge stronger to face next year. He highlighted the “never say die” attitude, and the fierce competitiveness and pride that are so much a part of the RedBlackWhite. He also shared a few anecdotal and humorous stories of his time at College, reminding our boys of the privilege of being a College boy, and calling on each one of them to live their College life in its entirety, with the history and many traditions, the brotherhood, and the sense of belonging.
The boys have all received their final marks now and it is important that you and they reflect on their performance overall and where things may or could improve in 2022. If there are any academic issues or points of concern, please feel free to raise them at your earliest convenience through the Heads of Department, Housemasters or our Deputy Head of Academics, Mrs Jeannette Finnie.
Covid-19 Pandemic Omnicron Variant and Vaccinations
Please may I ask that those of you who have yet not heeded the advice of the State President as well as numerous medical forums, please seriously consider having the vaccination sooner rather than later. The same applies even more so to your sons. As indicated in previous newsletters, as per Section 8 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), the Governing Body and school have a legal and moral responsibility to:
(1) “Every employer shall provide and maintain, as far as is reasonably practicable, a working environment that is safe and without risk to the health of his employees, and in particular:
(2) (b) taking such steps as may be reasonably practicable to eliminate or mitigate any hazard or potential hazard, to the safety or health of employees, before resorting to personal protective equipment.
(h) enforcing such measures as may be necessary in the interest of health and safety;”
- Section 9 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act records the following:
(1) “Every employer shall conduct his undertaking in such a manner as to ensure, as far as is reasonably practicable, that persons other than those in his employment who may be directly affected by his activities are not thereby exposed to hazards to their health or safety.”
The Governing Body and the school are doing all that it can with only nine staff who have as yet not vaccinated and there are reasons for that. One or two may well be exempted, but they will certainly be in the minority. We ask that you support the school as well as we as a community continue to fight the many variants of the Covid-19 pandemic.
We are desperate for our boys and staff to have a normal year in 2022 and by taking the vaccination we will certainly be well on our way to do so.
We understand that there are parents who have concerns related to the vaccine and we would recommend that you refer to the following official website for response to these queries: https://sacoronavirus.co.za/2021/10/18/should-my-teen-have-a-vaccine/

GROUP ACCIDENT AND NETCARE 911 TRAUMALINK INSURANCE FOR SCHOLARS
Parents are urged to thoughtfully consider taking advantage of The Group Personal Accident Insurance (GPA) offered through the school.
In accordance to our safety protocols, the School Executive has made the decision that NO boy who is scheduled to participate in any sport festival and/or tournament may attend without sufficient medical insurance. Such insurance could either be in the form of the school insurance (GPA), or own private medical aid/insurance, and MUST cover Accident & Emergency procedures at a hospital.
You will be notified via the Karri app that insurance payments and agreement is due on or before 31 January 2022. So, if you have not already done so, you will be required to download the app from the Playstore (for Android devices) or from the App Store (for Apple devices). When you receive your notice, you will be able to make your selection from the options available and pay directly via the app. Should you not require medical insurance, please select DISMISS.
IMPORTANT: please note that your son will only be covered once we are in receipt of:
1) the Digital Agreement and
2) your Proof of Payment; these will both be returned to the school via the Karri app.

Legislation entitles parents to apply for exemptions of school fees, subject to set criteria. While people who are eligible are clearly entitled to apply, we would at the same time ask our community as far as is possible to restrict such applications to cases of absolute necessity. This will hopefully ensure that the budgeted allocation of assistance is adequate and therefore that there will be no further imposition on our parent community. All parents who apply for a remission of fees will be asked to attend a meeting with a designated member of Management. Parents are reminded that no subsidy is received from the State and any assistance given is borne by the other fee-paying parents. The remission or exemption of fees applies only to dayboys. Boarders may not apply for exemption for either day or boarding fees.
RESOLUTIONS ADOPTED AT THE BUDGET MEETING HELD ON 29 OCTOBER 2021 FOR 2022 FEES
- In terms of Section 38(1), Section 39(1) and Section 39(2) of the South African Schools Act 84 of 1996, it is resolved:
- BUDGET – 2022
- That the budget as presented, and which reflects the estimated cumulative effect of the established trends of non-payment of school fees at Maritzburg College and the total, partial or conditional exemptions granted to parents at Maritzburg College, is approved and accepted.
- SCHOOL FEES – 2022
- That school fees may be determined and charged at Maritzburg College.
- That school fees at Maritzburg College for 2022 for Form 2 (Grade 8) will be R59 800, which includes a differential rate of R 3,910 per learner per annum and excludes the deposit already paid. The school fees for 2022 for Form 3 to 6 (Grade 9 -12) will be R 55 890 per learner per annum.
- The school fees do not include personal accident insurance for individual learners. This is available as an optional extra, at a cost to be debited to parents, and at the specific request of parents, on whom the onus rests to exercise this option.
- That school fees at Maritzburg College will be payable in advance in full on or before 31st January 2022.
- That the Governing Body of Maritzburg College may accept payment of school fees in ten monthly instalments starting on the first day of the first term and thereafter payable before the end of each subsequent month, to be paid in full by the end of October, provided that the Terms & Conditions (part of the Application Form) have been properly completed, signed.
- That should the parents’ personal details or circumstances change, they are required to notify the school in writing of such change.
- That Section 41 of the South African Schools Act process via the attorneys will apply to all overdue accounts which have not been honoured, as per either of the prescribed pre-selected two options (see Points 2.4 & 2.5 above).
- That the 2022 Tuition deposit of R2,200 (excluding the book deposit of R1,500) will be credited to the last month of the last year of tuition fees i.e. Form 6, or the year of withdrawal from Maritzburg College. Fee exemption parents will receive their deposit back only after any Sundries account amounts which may be owing are deducted. The credit will be applied to any handed over accounts there may be at the end of the learner’s career; if due, the balance will be refunded. Refunds must be formally requested in writing by parents, together with their banking details. Refund of a deposit requires a term’s notice period prior to refund in conjunction with a formal withdrawal notice at Admissions. Deposits are forfeited if these withdrawal procedures are not followed. Learners not returning at the beginning of any given year or term who do not adhere to the notice period will forfeit their deposit.
- That the book deposit of R1,500 will be retained in a separate account to cover any text or library books not returned annually by a pupil. Should these funds become depleted additional funds will be required.
- That payment of Tuition fees by debit order will be compulsory for all parents (unless otherwise negotiated prior to 31st January 2022). Debit orders, currently in place for 2021, will be carried forward by the Finance Department into 2022 and the amount of the debit order will be adjusted according to the fees as approved at the AGM. Please take into account the termly option dates for your financial planning and allow five working days for your debit order clearance. In 2022, termly payment dates will be: 19th January, 5th April, 19th July and 11th
- That payment of Boarding fees by debit order will be compulsory for all forms (unless otherwise negotiated prior to 31st January 2022). Debit orders, currently in place for 2021, will be carried forward by the Finance Department into 2021 and the amount of the debit order will be adjusted according to the fees as approved at the AGM. In 2020, termly payment dates will be: 19th January, 5th April, 19th July and 11th
- Debit order facility for Sundries accounts is available as an option and is not compulsory. Debit order forms can be obtained from the Finance Department.
- That payments received from Boarder parents will be allocated first to their sons’ Tuition fees, if these are in arrears, thereafter, to Boarding fees.
- That no learner will be admitted to the Boarding Establishment in the event of Boarding and/or Tuition fees and/or Sundries being outstanding or unpaid for the previous month, term or year.

- That the following procedure shall apply for exemption from and/or reduction in school fees:

- That all applications for exemption from or reduction in school fees must be submitted to the Credit Controller, or alternately the Accountant, of Maritzburg College on the prescribed form on or before 31st January 2022 or within 60 days of change of circumstances.
- That interviews may be conducted to verify information given by parents.
- That parents may appeal to the Head of Department at the KZNED against the decision of the Governing Body of Maritzburg College regarding exemption from or reduction in school fees, within 30 days of having received written notification from the school.
- That the Governing Body shall consider the combined gross income of the parents as defined in the ‘Regulations for Exemption of Parents from Payment of School Fees’, Government Gazette R1052 published on 18th October 2006.
- That the Governing Body may delegate the handling of all applications for exemption from and reduction in school fees to the Accountant or alternately the Credit Controller.
- That should no application for exemption from and/or reduction in school fees on the prescribed form be received by latest 31st January 2022, or within 60 days of change of circumstances, parents shall be ‘ipso facto’ barred from later applying for a reduction in school fees.

- That the following procedure shall apply for exemption from and/or reduction in school fees:
- SECTION 38A PAYMENTS

GOLDSTONES CLUB
The primary aims of this Club are to work towards providing a platform for the interaction between members of the College Community and, in turn, their involvement with the school. The Club’s main objective is to allow and encourage these members to make the most of their interaction with the school.
To help grow and ensure the success of this club, we need some 2nd and 3rd Form parents (both Moms and Dads) to join the committee. With an injection of membership will come new ideas and enthusiasm. If you are interested to deepen your involvement with and enjoyment of College, please email Sue Calmeyer on sue@mcollege.co.za.
Club members are required to be involved in a number of support areas of the school including the Zarmfarm, home catering and arranging social functions for the College parents. We will be at the New Parent Information Evening on Friday 4 February and will send out a request for volunteers at the start of 2022.
