Thought for the Week:
Going back to the basics strengthens your foundation
Rev Colin Moore conducted our opening dedication service for 2022.
Welcome to new staff and students
The Headmaster welcomed everyone to the start of the new term and the new year, and highlighted a theme of “Back to Basics”, as the school focuses on bringing back the pre-Covid essence of everything that is part of the College Culture and Credo. Mr Luman reminded staff and boys of the School wide goals for 2022:
- To encourage the College community, but especially the boys, to embrace the principles of College Culture and its Credo as part of life-long learning. – It is essential from the research feedback from Research House and Dr Cummins ‘Circle Education’, that all staff need to buy in and live these values and credo . The boys watch us and judge us. The days of saying ‘do as I say don’t do as I do’ are long gone . This will also be communicated to the parents
- To build on the foundation for College boys based on character education and the core values – this is also essential and a key component of our mentor programme which was significantly curtailed in 2020 and 2022.nnthony Sparrow has already spoken in detail about our new focus for 2022 where all staff are involved. Once again, this is essential part of who we and the boys are as a school – it is our DNA .
- To encourage each boy to strive towards realising his personal academic potential.- crucial to be encouraged and driven by the subject teacher, subject head , HODs and the mentor . Individual realistic subject Goals need to established at the start of the year and continually revisited throughout the course of the year. We need to maintain impetus, good work ethic and focus at all times as well as reward good work, improvements and excellence, as much as possible through the merit system amongst other measures of positive feedback.
- To continually enhance effective and meaningful communication within the community. – We need to maintain excellent communication /connection/relationship with our parents especially regarding their sons progress and or lack of progress. Mentors, housemasters [both day and BE] will also play a crucial role with regular communication to parents. A reminder that there is a 24hour rule to respond to all communiques internally and externally
- To continue to promote positive relationships through social awareness, respect and tolerance within the College community. This is a major focus for Mr Sparrow , Mrs Govender, Mr Thembela, Messrs Paterson and Sutherland and our leaders
F2 Orientation & Borver Week
Thank you to all Mr Smit and BE staff, prefects for the start of the F2 year as well as to Messrs Sparrow, Paterson ,Sutherland & staff, prefects and house leaders for the work involved already in Vietnam & Borver Week.
Mr Luman and other staff addressed the boys on matter pertaining to Health and Safety issues, before assembly ended with the singing of the College song.
