Theme: Leadership in Academics

Quote: Words may inspire but only action creates change.” ~ Simon Sinek

From Scripture:

‘I can do all things through him who strengthens me.’ – Philippians 4:13
‘Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.’ – Psalm 37:4
‘Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.’ – Proverbs 16:3

Pastor James Maistry, College’s Deputy Headmaster: Operations, shared with the boys, staff and guests an inspiring message around academic leadership.

ACADEMICS NSC RESULTS 2021

The class of 2021 achieved a 100% pass rate and an 89% Bachelors’ Pass  with a total of 15 boys achieving 7 distinctions – the most since 2011! We also had a total of 456 distinctions which is a significant improvement on 2020. These overall results are among the best that College has produced for many years, and we are immensely proud of our boys and dedicated staff!

The pinnacle of this success saw seven of our boys placed in the top 10 in the district, and invited to attend a special ceremony hosted by His Worship the Mayor of Msunduzi Municipality, Cllr M.M Thebolla.

Maritzburg College was honoured to receive the award for the top performing school in the District.

Further details of these academic achievements can be found here.

Mrs Dlamini spoke to the guests in the Alan Paton hall, offering her congratulations and best wishes, and Professor Finnie, Chairman of the SGB and Old Collegian also addressed the boys.

Athletics Achievements

The focus then moved to celebrating our athletes who stood out on the sports field last week,  producing outstanding once-in-a-lifetime performances. Special guest for this part of the assembly, was Mr Peter Kyle (OC 1974), and up until Friday, the current holder of the 100m U17 and U19 records since 1974. Mr Kyle’s times were on grass and not on world class tartan track, but nevertheless the efforts by College’s young men, Kayembe and Mosebi, on Friday were exceptional.

Mr Peter Kyle was born to Bob and Margaret Kyle in the small town of Harding in 1956. He was one of three sons to attend Maritzburg College. An accomplished athlete, as a junior he returned faster 100m times than Paul Nash, who tied the 100 metre world record four times. Mr Kyle played 1st XV team rugby in 1973 and 1974 where he was also selected for the Natal schools team. He is a family man who has three of his own children, one of whom is our own, Mr Ryan Kyle, Deputy Headmaster, and 10 grandchildren. He and his wife Heather reside in Howick.

Mr Kyle presented the awards and trophies to the record breakers and winners of each age group from the Athletics Championships (full details here)

WEEKEND SPORT ACTIVITIES

It was a very busy weekend of sport for Maritzburg College.

Our Inter-House Athletics Championship held on Friday 28 January, saw 4 long-standing records tumble in the 100m and high jump. The school’s team fixtures for the week were mostly against local rival St Charles College, with a number of very good results in the cricket, waterpolo, basketball, tennis and squash matches. College won 7 of their cricket matches against St Charles; and with some matches played against other sides; overall results saw College win 9 of their 14 games, drawing 1 and losing 4. Closely contested basketball games were the order of the day,  with College winning 15 of their 18 matches, with wins for all the top teams and a 1st team victory of 81-66. In addition our U16 side took part in a basketball tournament, going through to the final and finishing in 2nd place overall. College emerged the victors 6 – 2 in their Top 8 squash encounters against St Charles, and our 1st Waterpolo team enjoyed a 12-2 victory against St Charles in the pool.
