ACADEMICS NSC RESULTS 2021
Last year’s Matric results were truly outstanding. As we have communicated, the class of 2021 achieved a 100% pass rate and an 89% Bachelors’ Pass with a total of 15 boys achieving 7 distinctions – the most since 2011! We also had a total of 456 distinctions which is a significant improvement on 2020. These overall results are among the best that College has produced for many years, and we are immensely proud of our boys and dedicated staff!
Maritzburg College was honoured to receive the award for the top performing school in the District.

Our top matriculant, Morgan Pearson, placed 3rd in the district with 7 distinctions and 5 subjects in excess of 90% achieved the following outstanding results:

Good morning Mr Luman, staff, guests, school, and most importantly, matrics of 2022. It is an overwhelming honour to have been invited back to these hallowed walls to share a few words of encouragement with you all. This message will be especially relevant to the matric class of 2022, but I hope that the rest of you will be able to gain something from it too.
Complete with Covid-19 related disruptions and even riots which decimated many local businesses and stores, 2021 was not short of instability. Matric was definitely the most difficult year of my schooling career, and it is likely that it will be the most difficult year of your schooling career too.
The month of trials was the worst of them all.
Following all the advice I had been given by matrics of previous years, I prepared myself as well as I thought I could. I drew out time tables, set my goals and did more past papers than I could count.
I clapped with a feigned happiness as my friends received award after award which I had imagined receiving myself, leaving none for me. The stress of trials and the pressure I had put on myself had led to me feeling completely overwhelmed at times, often barely able to keep myself afloat. I had missed all but 1 of my goals. I am not up here to tell you about my lofty expectations of myself, but to tell you how I overcame the setbacks of trials. These are some of the most important things that I found helped me:
- Get enough sleep.
If you find yourself awake at midnight still studying, you’ve messed up. Set yourself a reasonable bedtime, and stop studying at least an hour before it.
2. Plan well and realistically.
Give yourself enough time to study everything you need to, as well as relax. It is only through being realistic with yourself about your capabilities and how much you can get done that you’ll be able to get to bed on time. For me I relaxed by watching the T20 World Cup, working out, and tutoring others in maths. That brings me to my next point.
- Find a way to give back and help each other out.
This could be through group calls in which you discuss literature you’re having trouble understanding, or tutoring your mate in a subject you are more confident in. Matric is not a race to be run alone. Success can only be achieved if we all help each other out.
- Ask for help when you need it.
If you need academic assistance or if your mental health has taken a toll, ask for help. I cannot stress this enough. We are lucky to have a great support system in our school whereby we all have house masters and mentor teachers who all genuinely care about your welfare. Make use of it.
- Most importantly, make time for God.
Trust in Him to give you strength to push through the trials and obstacles that the path to finals will undoubtedly be beset with.
It came as a complete surprise to me when I received my results. By following these tips, I was able to not only meet, but surpass all my goals. I hope that they’ll help you to do the same. I extend thanks on behalf of all my peers to the many teachers, parents, and mentors that have helped us all through the last 5 years. Thank you for guiding us and setting us up with immovable foundations.
