Fishbowl Session: The Red Flags Conversation

In light of recent events which transpired within the walls of Maritzburg College, the Social Awareness Forum leadership saw fit to host a fishbowl on the topic: The Red Flags Conversation.

The full presentation to boys and staff around “Red Flags” by our School Psychologist Mrs Cassidy Griffiths can be found here

The purpose of the Fishbowl session was to educate learners on the ability to be able to identify Red Flags both in their everyday lives as well as in a schooling environment.

Maritzburg College invited schools which included Pietermaritzburg Girl’s High School, The Wykeham Collegiate, Epworth School and Hilton College to attend this fishbowl.

The Fishbowl took place in the Epoch Optima. Presentations were given by both Mr Shongwe and College’s School Psychologist, Mrs Cassidy Griffiths. Mr Shongwe explored the different human rights and also spoke about the responsibilities that those rights come with. Mrs. Griffiths looked at ‘groomers’, the psychological effects and supportive platforms within the country and the school. Both speakers were very effective in delivering their message.

The open floor discussion provided an opportunity for learners to voice their thoughts and opinions which proved to be very effective; learners were asked to answer the question, “what are we as adults doing that restricts them from reaching out and speaking out”.

Overall, the first fishbowl of the year was very successful and we look forward to our next session, our topic will be farm murders. The event also also opened up discussions of future collaborations with schools such as Pietermaritzburg Girl’s High School, Epworth and The Wykeham Collegiate as well as the invitation of other neighboring schools such as Alexandra High School and St. Nicholas Diocesan School.

Thank you to Mr Ngcebo Thembela for facilitating and leading this important initiative.
