Maritzburg College welcomes back OC Olympian Martin Binedell

OC & Olympic swimmer Martin Binedell shares his post-College journey

Martin Binedell, one of our College old boys who has followed through on his goals and ambitions and achieved international status as a South African swimmer visited College this week and spoke to boys and staff, sharing some of his post-College journey.

Martin matriculated in 2013 as a prefect from College, with 6As, and just a few years later, was competing at an international level. A commonwealth games bronze medalist, Africa Games and African Champs record holder, Martin also competed in the men’s 200 metre backstroke event at the Summer Olympics. He is also a Lifesaving world Champs medalist and national record holder. Not content with just his swimming achievements, Martin has found time to continue his studies and obtained a degree in Marketing Management with distinction.

In his inspiring message to the boys and staff of College, Martin highlighted the many hours of commitment and training required to reach the top in sport, as well as the mental and emotional strength needed. He shared with the boys three key lessons he has learned from his experiences; firstly “Work on what is within your control” and what can be managed, and recognise those things that are out of your control. The second lesson is “Winning isn’t everything” and doesn’t define who you are. Even with all the best preparation and training, you may not win, because someone else is better. The 3rd lesson is to “Have Fun” and enjoy what you do.

Before leaving, Martin spent some time catching up with boys and staff, who were very keen to hear his post-College journey.
