1st XI Report – Robbie Coutts (1st XI coach)

The College First XI brought home a comfortable victory this past weekend against Northwood, putting together arguably their best performance of the season.

College won the toss and had no hesitation in electing to bat on a wicket that would offer the bowlers early assistance, but with the wet outfield, would quickly become easier to bat. At the start to the bowling innings, the Northwood bowling attack put College under pressure with some well-disciplined bowling picking up the early wicket of Delport, run out with the score on 10.  College were never able to completely take control of the game but kept themselves in the contest with many small partnerships. The biggest partnership of 69 between captain Johnathan van Zyl and Luc Jacobs set the game up for College, setting the hosts 197 for victory. Van Zyl top scored for his team with a well-played 82; other important contributions were from Caleb Thomas (35) and Jacobs who scored a run a ball 30.

Northwood got off to a steady start, getting to 19 before Bryn Brokensha took a smart caught and bowled to break the opening partnership. Northwood were never able to put together any substantial partnerships and with three quick wickets in the 19th and 20th overs, Northwood were under pressure at 81 for 6. Spinners Chad Mason and James Wiggill bowled well in tandem, bowling their allotted 20 overs for only 45 runs. After tea, the College bowlers in searching for wickets bowled to straight and in doing so allowed Northwood to put together their biggest partnership of their innings, that of 54. The reintroduction of Jacobs who had earlier picked up 2 wickets ensured there would be no late innings drama, he picked up four wickets with some excellent seam bowling. Jacobs ending the match, once again linking up with Van Zyl who took a smart catch standing up to the wicket. Northwood all out for 150, giving College a 46 run win.
