The Goldstones Club is delighted to release its authentic, all-white supporters’ rugby jersey, which pays homage to one of the school’s most famous 1st XVs – the championship-winning team of 1900.

In that year, the Maritzburg College 1st XV, captained by the legendary Mr AS “Madevu” Langley, won the Murray Cup, which was (and still is) the premier trophy contested by senior rugby clubs in KZN.

As can be seen from the photo, which shows Mr Langley and his luxurious moustache posing with the prized silverware, as well as the “Father of College”, Mr RD Clark, on the far right, looking dapper in his top hat, the 1st XV of that year played in white jerseys, decorated with a school badge on the breast pocket.

Interestingly, the school badge at the time was a slightly squatter version of the badge we have today, and the carbine and assegai were displayed in the reverse.

Acknowledging the appetite of many people for nostalgia-evoking retro garb, the revived jersey, which was released by the Goldstones Club on Reunion Day 2022, faithfully follows the original design, including the weapons shown in the reverse.

One of the first buyers of the new jersey was none other than 51-cap Springbok rugby player, Jesse Kriel (OC 2012), who clearly enjoyed wearing an item of clothing that harked back to the long-lost days of the Anglo-Boer War, of heroic moustaches and of drawled exhortations of “C’mon, chaps!”

The jerseys are available for purchase from the College Shoppe, which can be contacted at shoppe@mcollege.co.za. or visit the online platform here.

The cost is R750 (excluding P&P).
