Overview Sporting Achievements

Our College boys participated in a number of sporting events during the holidays, representing both the school, province and country.

 

Canoeing

Congratulations to I Hemingway who paddled in the Berg River canoe marathon and was placed 1st u18 paddler and 27th overall. This is a wonderful achievement in a grueling 4-day event.

 

Soccer

The College 1st XI participated in the Kloof tournament which took place between 24 – 26 June. The team posted the following results:

vs George Campbell, won 2 – 1

Saturday 25/06
vs Westville, Drew 1 – 1 (lost 4 – 3 on penalties.)

Sunday 26/06
vs Empangeni, Lost 4 – 3

Well done to our 1st XI who have had a good season to date.

 

Rugby

Grant Khomo Week 2022
27-30 June 2022
Kimberley
The following 6 Maritzburg College u16 boys represented the Sharks at the annual Grant Khomo Week in Kimberley:

Swelihle Mbatha

The team won their first two games that included a great win over Western Province. This meant they played in the unofficial final on the final day vs Free State.
Unfortunately, they could not overcome the men from Bloemfontein and finished the week in second place.

Won 24 – 7

Day 3:   Sharks vs Free State

Academy Week 2022
4 – 7 July 2022
Wellington
Congratulations to Mr Orchard, who was selected as the forwards coach of the Academy team and did a wonderful job with the team. The following 5 boys was selected to represent the Sharks at the annual u18 Academy Week in Wellington:

Unfortunately, Luyanda Kunene could not travel with the team due to an injury.

The Sharks opted to select an u17 team and the team won all three their games, beating the Free State in the unofficial final to be crowed Academy Week Champions for 2022.

Won 45 – 15

Day 3:   Sharks vs Free State
Won 32 – 20

 

Craven Week 2022
4 – 9 July 2022
Rondebosch
Congratulations to Mr Kriek who was selected as the Head Coach of the Craven Week team and did a fantastic job, with the assistance of his coaching team, in galvanising the group together. The following 4 boys was selected to represent Maritzburg College at the flagship Youth Week Tournament of SA Rugby the u18 Craven Week.

Sphakanyiswa Ngcobo
Sasaha Kadira was also drafted into the team for the final game vs SWD to cover for the injured Sphephelo Mbonambi.

The team performed well losing a narrow encounter against the host Union, Western Province.

Litelihle Bester was also selected to represent the SA Schools team on Saturday 16 July 2022 to play versus the SA Schools ‘A’ Team in Cape Town, well done to Bester on his selection.  The Sharks team ended the week ranked in 3rd place.

Hockey
U18 IPT, Stellenbosch: 26th June-1st July
4 College boys represented KZN Inland u18A at the u18 IPT. The team achieved a 3rd place after losing a shootout to KZN Coastal’s A after the scores were locked at 2-2 at full time. This was after the Inland team topped their pool and beat Southern Free State in the 3rd/4th match. Matthew Ponter was the vice-captain of the team.

The u18B team, which included 9 College boys, also participated in the A section, and manage to win their relegation battle against Southern Gauteng B, to remain in the A section. Sam Hamilton was the captain of the team.

Congratulations to Roan Marais who was selected for the SA Schools B team.

 

U16 IPT, Stellenbosch: 7th -13th July
8 College boys represented the u16A KZN Inland team. After a slow day 1, the u16A side ended up making the final and again going down narrowly to KZN Coastal’s 2-3, to claim a silver medal. Ipeleng Mosupye was the vice-captain of the team.

The u16B team who, just like the u18B team, plays in the A section, managed to win their cross-pool match vs EP A and came 10th overall, which also meant they retained their A section status for 2023. Noah Jackson was the captain of the team, which included 7 College boys.

Congratulations to Esihle Dlamini, Nic Holmes, Ipeleng Mosupye and Dane Jackson who were all selected for the SA u16 High Performance squad, who stayed behind for a 3-day training camp.

 

U14 SA games/IPT: 9th -13th July/ 26th June- 30th June
The South African winter games took place in Benoni and included 5 College boys. The team did extremely well, clinching a win in the final, meaning they were crowned champions of the winter games 2022.

The KZN Inland U14A team, who took part in the North Regional IPT held at Kearsney, won bronze. The team lost to KZN Coastal’s in the semi-final who were the eventual winners. The team included 7 College boys. The u14B team, who participated in the tournament in the same tournament, included 5 College boys, captained by Heath Hackland. The team finished 5th in the A section.

 

 

Squash

Maritzburg College are incredibly proud of the following squash players who represented KwaZulu-Natal age group teams at various SA Schools’ IPT Tournaments:
U/19A KZN team (Shrivar Maharaj) – finished in 7th position in the U/19A division.
U/19B KZN team (Matt Mason, Thomas Pratt, Nikhiel Moodley) – finished in 3rd position in the U/19B division, obtaining a bronze medal.
U/16A team (William Galliers) – finished in 5th position in the U/16A division.
U/14A team (Tilak Nana) – finished in 8th position in the U/14A division.

Furthermore, we would like to congratulate Mr McGuigan and our 1st team who have been invited to participate in the SA Schools’ Top School Tournament which takes place in East London from next week Thursday, 28 July. This tournament is the most prestigious event on the schools’ squash calendar, where eight of the best school teams from across the country will battle for this year’s title. We would like to wish our team the best of luck for their upcoming tournament.

 

Golf

The Maritzburg College Golf team participated in a Golf tour that took place on the South Coast during the holidays. Ten players represented College at the event. There were some good results and many positive learning experiences for the team.

Results to note were as follows:
K Manickum played in the B division and posted the following results –

J Truter played in the A division and posted the following results –
