THEME: RESPECT
From Scripture:
Respect for the Lord:
“You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” Deuteronomy 6:5
Respect for Family Members
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.” – Exodus 20:12
Respect for Others
“Let nothing be done through strife or vain glory; but in lowliness of mind hold others in higher regard than themselves.” – Philippians 2:3
“Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honour to whom honour is owed.” – Romans 13:7
A Prayer
“Heavenly father we humbly ask that you will continue to guide us in our relationships with all the people we deal with on a daily basis, and assist us to always treat everyone and everything with respect. In your name we pray, Amen
THEME OF THE WEEK: RESPECT
Last week we focused on the theme of respect and self-respect as well. You were addressed by an OC Mr Galtry on this topic as well and he also requested that we abide by these guidelines
The theme for this week’s character education mentor programme is the core value and core tradition as per our College pledge of RESPECT
The Urban dictionary definition of respect states:
“It means valuing each other’s points of views. It means being open to being wrong. It means accepting people as they are. It means not dumping on someone because you’re having a bad day. It means being polite and kind always, because being kind to people is not negotiable. It means not dissing [act disrespectfully] people because they’re different to you. It means not gossiping about people or spreading lies.”
Confucius says “Respect yourself and others will respect you.” which is very similar to the Spanish proverb “If you want to be respected, you must respect yourself.”
Buddha says, “You should respect each other and refrain from disputes; you should not, like water and oil, repel each other, but should, like milk and water, mingle together.”
Kuhlo-ni-shwana kabili [RESPECT IS TWO WAYS MUTUAL] – when a person respects one another, that respect should be reciprocated. Similarly, when one helps another, that help should be reciprocated. For you to earn respect you have to give it.
These aspects are being focussed on in the character education lesson on Wednesday with the various forms.
- We need to display respect for self, women, one another, our school, leadership in our school.
- We need to all strive to ensure that we are as mutually respectful as possible.
- “Treat people the way you want to be treated. Talk to people the way you want to be talked to. Respect is earned, not given.”
- A reminder that greeting works both ways – if you are greeted you must respond. When you see teachers, admin staff, other adults, greet them first please, and staff please acknowledge the greeting.
Over the past weekend, we as a school showed immense respect for our visitors and their families, staff and supporters. This feedback was provided unsolicited. Thank you very much
AFFIES EXCHANGE SPORT RESULTS:
Maritzburg College welcomed one of the school’s strongest rivals, Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskools (Affies) to the campus for a full round of sporting and cultural fixtures on Friday and Saturday. In addition to rugby and hockey matches, there was a wonderful cultural exchange involving the College Choir, Jazz Band, Affies Choir and Swing Band. In addition, the two schools competed in interschool chess, golf, tennis and table tennis matches.
This weekend also saw College’s soccer U16A side crowned KZN champions after winning the KwaZulu-Natal High Schools’ Football Association knockout tournament, beating DHS 2-0. There were also good results in squash, canoeing and XCO events over the weekend.

The College Music Department shared a concert with the Affies Music department. It was a special evening of Music celebration featuring the College Choir, Jazz Band, Affies Choir and Swing Band. Our first exchange with them since 2019 however our first home exchange with them.
Both the Affies Choir and Jazz band showed the class and excellence that comes with the standard of their department however the College music department did not hold back and showed sheer class in their performances. We capped off the lovely collaborative evening with a combined Jazz band piece. It was a great honour to share the stage with the Affies music department. We hope for more of this in the future.
We wish the choir and jazz band a successful trip to JHB where they will perform at KES on Thursday evening and then at PBHS assembly on Friday and then the choir at the finals of the ATKV competition.
