Assembly 20 August: Leadership

Assembly:  LEADERSHIP:

From Scripture

‘Therefore a leader must be above reproach, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach’ – 1 Timothy 3:2

‘Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.’ – 1 Timothy 4:12

‘Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.’ – Proverbs 22:6

A Prayer:

Dear Lord, please help us to lead with dignity, humility and respect and all times being a good example in all that we do.

Amen

What is leadership?

A simple definition: “Leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal.”

Put even more simply, a leader is the inspiration and director of the action. He or she is the person in the group who possesses the combination of personality and skills that makes others want to follow his or her direction. Before you can lead someone else you need to be able to lead yourself in all aspects of your life.

In the words of Mahatma Ghandi: “We must become the change we want to see”

Admiral A. Burke shares the following quote: “Leadership is understanding people and involving them to help you do a job. That takes all of the good characteristics like integrity, dedication of purpose, selflessness, knowledge, skill, relentless, as well as determination not to accept failure.

The leader who knows his strengths and weaknesses is likely to be far more effective than the one who remains blind to them. He or she is also on the road to humility, that priceless attitude of openness to life that can help one absorb mistakes, failures or personal shortcomings.

This week following on from the leadership camp, a number of 5th form boys have been selected to attend interviews to potentially be appointed as acting prefects and prefects at College and a similar process will occur in the BE. These along with the Acting House Leaders will all be announced at a special assembly on Thursday.

Ultimately these gentlemen all need to display the following characteristics of a good servant leader viz

  • Put the needs of others first
  • Help others to develop to be the best that they can be
  • Be willing to learn from others
  • Share power
  • Forsake personal advancement and rewards
  • Be prepared to listen and build a sense of community

Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others. “ – Jack Welch

Leadership expert Dr John Maxwell wrote: On December 18, 1998, I had a serious heart attack. That night as I lay on the floor waiting for an ambulance, I remember thinking two things: First, I was too young to die. Second, I had not completed some of the things I wanted to accomplish… One of the most beneficial outcomes of my heart attack experience was that it motivated me to ask myself, “What will my legacy be?

A legacy is something we leave behind to the next generation.
It can be principles we lived that carry on beyond our lives.
It also can be people we have influenced whose lives are better as a result of knowing us.
How do you wish to be remembered?
What will your legacy be?
Whether one likes it or not, leaders will be remembered one way or another.
Leaders will leave a legacy.
What will that legacy be?

The College Gospel choir gave a moving performance for the school.
