Overview Sporting Achievements

Maritzburg College’s soccer teams had an excellent weekend, with the 1st team retaining the Raw Cup and beating DHS, while our U15 side were crowned the KZN League and Cup double champions.   Rugby 7’s got off to a good start with the U15 team winning the plate at the Glenwood tournament.

 

 

Soccer

College’s soccer teams took on DHS over the weekend, winning 6 of their 12 games and drawing 5, with just one loss.

The weekend was a memorable one for the College soccer fraternity with the 1st XI retaining the famous Raw Cup, a trophy that was first played for between the two old rivals Maritzburg College and DHS in 1876. The final score for the 2022 game was 4-2 in favour of Maritzburg College. In the down-the-line fixtures vs DHS, College were dominant, losing only one fixture on the day, drawing five and winning six.

On Sunday, our U15A team cemented themselves as the best team in their age group in KZN by winning the KZN High Schools’ FA Knockout Cup, beating Westville, DHS, Kingsway and Queensburgh on their way to the trophy. Added to their winning of the U15 second term league, they are now league and cup double champions.

Rugby 7’s

This weekend, College U15 and U17 rugby 7’s teams took part in the Glenwood tournament. It was a good start for the U15 team who went through to the plate final, beating DHS 19-0.

U17 Match Report (Mr Kevin Elder)

The Maritzburg College u17 team participated in the Glenwood 7’s tournament held at Glenwood this past weekend. Maritzburg College was placed in pool A alongside Glenwood, DHS 2, Northwood, and Ixopo. With only a week of preparation, the boys adapted quickly to how the 7s game had to be played. Facing a strong Glenwood side first up, College lost 14-29. After looking at the lessons that were learned in the first game, the boys bounced back with an impressive win against a physical Northwood side, 10-7. The 3rd match saw College beat DHS 2 convincingly 43-0. The last pool match was against a gutsy Ixopo side whom played the game in high spirits and the College men were victorious, 78-0.  After finishing 2nd in their pool, College were up against a very strong DHS 1 side who finished top in pool B. After leading 17-7 at halftime the DHS side came back strongly in the second half and won 26-22.

U15 Match Report (Mr Claude Pitout

College u15 7 side started their season of strong with a 28-7 win over Nortwood B followed by a norrow defeat to DHS 10-14. After a disappointing loss 0-28 against Westville the team re-gathered their strength their in the remaining two games. The team convincingly beat Clifton 34-5 and won the plate final against DHS B 19-0.

Well done to J Werth who came 3rd overall in U16 Cross Country District Trials and should be invited to KZN Trials in September.
