Assembly 27 August: Perseverance

Assembly:  PERSEVERANCE

Thought for the Week

“It is hard to beat a person who never gives up.” ~ Babe Ruth

The theme for this week is Perseverance and will be covered in this with your mentor in character education lesson this week considering aspects of grit and determination

From Scripture

So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak.
When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.
Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.”
But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” Genesis 32:24-26

Jacob was a man of real grit, determination and perseverance displaying a firmness of mind and spirit as well as  unyielding courage in the face of personal hardship and danger. Tough, tenacious, and fiercely relentless, Jacob pursued his divine mission with unflinching resolve.

A prayer:

Dear Lord thank you for your support and guidance in assisting us to persevere, be determined and display grit as we strive to reach our full potential in all that we do.

Amen

“Perseverance is not a long race; it is many short races one after the other.” – Walter Elliot (Scottish politician)

Grit is how much effort you are willing to put in. If you do not persevere you will never put any effort in. Effort is battle between yourself. No one else determines how much effort you are going to put into something. That is all on you. Talent and IQ can only get you so far.

Grit is effort when you do not feel like it. It is pushing for your goal or dream even when it is difficult.

“The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a man’s determination’Tommie Lasorda [a famous and very successful baseball manager ]

If you truly want to improve in anything in life it is going to take continued effort which is only possible if you have learnt to persevere, be determined and have grit.

It is appropriate that College honours our Comrades Marathon heroes from last weekend. Four of our staff members; Messrs Trodd, Shabalala, Seager and  Mrs Van Merwe displayed incredible grit, determination and perseverance running and completing the Comrades Marathon – well done, we are proud of each of you!

Thank you too to Mr Croeser, Ms Mhlongo, Sister Claire Olivier and the 86 College boys who assisted as stretcher bearers, as well as the 20 boys helping at the Thirsti Water tables

Behaviour & Discipline

There have been a large number of discipline issues and hearings s of late due to poor choices and irresponsible behaviour, involving illegal substances, vaping, and social media contraventions.

Gentlemen this must stop! You are only going to cause yourself considerable grief otherwise, and your parents. You may not bring vapes to school or the BE. You may not smoke or drink or take forbidden substances. You may not smoke marijuana or sell it.  You will be expelled by the DoE.

You may not take photos of other boys using your phone doing illicit actions and share with a friend. You can be charged for illegal distribution. You need to stop doing all the things you know are not permitted, and start behaving responsible – the way every College boy should behave.

Academics

Our 6th formers commence their crucial Trial Exams this week, and we wish them every success. They will be writing most of their exams in the APMH and we ask that you respect that and are quiet around the hall at all times.

Prestige Concert

Congratulations and thank you to all the members of the College Choir, College Jazz Band and the many soloists who performed on Friday evening.
By all accounts, this was a wonderful evening of music.
Thank you to all the staff for their efforts as well.
