Sporting Results 5 September 2022

Overview Sporting Achievements

This weekend Maritzburg College hosted the Nashua 7’s tournament on our campus with 10 schools participating. College’s U18 and U15 teams both progressed to the final losing narrowly to Hilton and Westville respectively.

College’s soccer 1st XI won the Cowie Cup in a final played against Carter, and lost narrowly to Hilton in the semi-final of the PMB FA Cup.

College’s 1st XI cricket team participated in the St David’s Festival, drawing both their matches, with some very good performances from the whole team. There were also good results for the basketball and canoe polo teams over the weekend.

 

Rugby Sevens

The Nashua 7’s took place on Saturday with 12 teams from 10 schools taking part. College’s U18 A team had a great tournament progressing through to the final before losing to Hilton College 17-19. The U15 tournament saw Maritzburg College’s A side also go through to the final and lose narrowly to Westville 17-19.

U18 A Report (Kelvin Elder)

College U18 team was placed in a pool with Glenwood and Weston; they beat Weston 65-0 before they played a strong Glenwood team and come out victorious with a score of 34-14. The team went into the quarter finals having to play against the College B team. The match was played in high spirits and the A team stepped out as winners to claim a 45 -7 win. College then faced Westville in the semi- finals and showed great character and heart to beat the visitors 26-12. The other semi- final saw Hilton beating DHS 17-12 to advance to the Cup Final.

The final kicked off at 17:00 and the game build up to the final was filled with excitement. The final game started with College getting a yellow card and going down to 6 men for 2 minutes. The players had to dig deep to put points on the scoreboard and succeeded shortly after the yellow card. College scored again before Hilton got their first points to make it 10- 7 at half time. The second half started with College scoring under the poles and to take a 17-7 lead. Hilton fought back and scored twice to take a 19-17 lead. College fought back till the end but came up short. Congratulations to Hilton for winning the final.

 

U15 A Report (Claude Pitout)

College u15’s started of strong, winning both their pool games by beating Weston 62-0 and beating Glenwood 38-10. College went on to beat Northwood B in the quarter final and then Northwood A in a thrilling semi-final coming back after being 22-0 down. College had a tough start in the final being 19-0 down in the first half. The game ended with the final score being 19-17 to Westville. The team showed a lot of character and ended 2nd overall.

 

 

Soccer

Maritzburg College 1st XI took part in the Cowie Cup, which is the KZNHSFA knockout tournament for U19’s. The tournament was a straight knockout format and begun with 32 teams from across KZN. It culminated in an all-PMB final with College and Carter taking each other on. A random draw was done to determine the venue and Goldstones was selected as the venue. In a hard-fought game, College emerged as victors, with a 1-0 win thanks to a breakaway goal from Grayson Mentory. The cup was lifted by College captain, Luphiwe Mdletye as College were crowned champions for 2022.

College’s other soccer teams played 15 fixtures against St Charles College, winning 11 games, drawing two and losing two.

Over the weekend, the 1st XI participated in the PMB FA Cup, hosted at Hilton College. College emerged group winners with results of 1-0 vs Linpark; 7-0 vs Heritage Academy and 3-1 vs St Charles. In the quarter-final, they played Ixopo and won 2-1 and unfortunately fell 1-0 to the hosts and eventual winners, Hilton College in the semi-finals.

 

Cricket

College’s 1stXI took part in the St David’s Festival, with two matches being played; against KES and St Stithians. It was a very good performance from the whole team over the two matches with some excellent batting; van Zyl (91 and 166*), Jacobs (89 & Player of the match), and Quin (70 off 64 balls), which bodes well for the season ahead.

Canoe Polo

College took part in the Canoe Polo schools league event this past weekend at the UKZN pool.
College A Team placed 2nd
College B Team placed 3rd

 

 

Basketball

College faced Kearsney in the winter league game over the weekend, winning their match 58-45.

 

 

Table Tennis

Three College boys have been selected to represent Umgungundlovu at the South African Table Tennis Championship which will take place in Durban from 1-5 October.
