This weekend it was Maritzburg College’s soccer teams who stole the limelight, winning the KZN Champion of Champions tournament and beating rivals Westville 2-0.

Soccer

In what was the finale to their footballing year, the Maritzburg College 1st XI soccer team travelled to Westville to play in the KZN Champion of Champions tournament, where they would take on 2nd Term Inland Champs, Haythorne and 2nd Term Coastal Champs, Westville, in a league format tournament.

Their first game was against Haythorne and they unfortunately went down 1-2, with S Bukhosini scoring what would prove to be a vital consolation goal. After Haythorne lost 1-0 to Westville, the boys in red, black and white knew what would be needed to claim the trophy. Needing to win by 2 or more goals, the 1st XI started off on the right foot, taking a 1-0 lead into half time thanks to another Bukhosini header. Deep into the second half, S Myende popped up with a brilliant foray into the Westville box which resulted in a powerful strike for College’s 2nd goal. The game ended 2-0 and

Maritzburg College were crowned KZN Champion of Champions, capping off a very successful year for the College soccer fraternity. The boys have earned their freedom and liberty for a short period before those who were selected depart to represent KZN on a tour to Johannesburg during the upcoming school holidays.
