Overview Sporting Achievements
Over the school holidays, College boys participated in a range of sporting events and tournaments including the Oppenheimer Michaelmas Week which College hosted, U14A and U15A cricket festivals, the Kearsney Basketball Tournament, U16 Water polo, the Fish River Canoe Marathon and the Schools SA Interprovincial Golf Championship.
62nd Oppenheimer Michaelmas Cricket Week
Maritzburg College hosted 19 schools for the 62nd Oppenheimer Michaelmas Cricket Week on our campus. Despite weather conditions ranging widely from blazing 38 degree heat to a chilly and wet 12 degrees, there was plenty of excellent cricketing action.
College’s four matches were against some of the top cricketing teams in the country, with the 1st XI narrowly losing three 50 overs matches and winning the 4th (20 overs).

U15 Tournament
The College U15A team took part in a tournament at Grey High winning 3 of their 4 matches.
Their first match was against Grey, College opened the batting, scoring 221/8 in their 50 overs; Nadasan top scoring at 89 and Dedekind 67. Grey were reduced to 185 all out; Pembridge taking 4/31, and College won by 36 runs.
Vs Paul Roos, Paul Roos scored 167/9; with Gwala taking 4 for 30. College replied with 169/7; Dzanibe top scored with 52 and van Rooyen made 43. College won the match by 3 wickets.
Vs Selborne; Selborne batted first scoring 173 all out. Gwala bowled well again taking 4 wickets for just 26 runs supported by Dedekind with figures of 2 for 17. College replied with 176/5, Dzanibe top scoring again with 61*, and College won the match by 5 wickets.
Vs SACS; SACS made 150/6 in a T20 match. College replied with 124/8 in their 20 overs and lost by 26 runs.
U14 Tournament
College’s U14A cricket side were also in action over the holidays, playing in a tournament at Hilton College. They took on Rondebosch first scoring 226 all out (58.2 overs), Bharath 51, van Niekerk 76, de Bruyn 41. In a time match, Rondebosch replied with 145/8 (51 overs), and the match was drawn.
Vs St Stithian’s; in a 50 over match, College scored 187/8 (du Toit 47*). St. Stithian’s replied with 188/6, and College lost by 4 wickets
Vs Wynberg; Wynberg made 268/6 in their 50 overs, College replied with 199 and lost the match by 69 runs.
Against Grey College in a T20 match, College bowled first. Grey scored 167/1 in 20 overs. College made 128/8 (de Bruyn 64*) and lost the match by 39 runs.
These encounters have been valuable learning experiences for our U14A side, who have acquitted themselves well.
Basketball
College’s 1st team basketball took part in the Kearsney ISBT. After winning all their games, they progressed through to the quarter final where they beat Grey 78-33. In the semi-final they played against PBHS and won their match 47-34 which took them through to the final against KES which they won 53-45.

College faced off against strong opposition from Cape Town and Johannesburg in the opening rounds, and did very well to win all their pool and play-off games. The team encountered KES in the final, after meeting them in the Round Robin section in a close game. The game started off with both teams coming hot out the blocks. The lead changed throughout the first half with no team in total control, before opening up during the final quarter when College rallied as a team and to stretch out in front eventually winning the game.
Special mention must go to the following players for playing consistently at a high level throughout the weekend; L Dlamini, I Masinga, T Crawford, L Coetze and K Mthimkhulu.

Canoeing
College boys, old boys and staff competed in the SA river championships at the Fish River marathon.
OC Andy Birkett won the men’s K1 event, with OC Dave Evans finishing in 6th place and OC Scott Little finishing in 7th. College’s canoe coach and Olympian, Bridgitte Hartley won the ladies event, successfully defending her K1 title.

Golf
Three College boys were selected for the KZN golf teams taking part in the SA School Interprovincial tournament.
The KZNA team which included L Akerman and J Truter won the event, while the KZNB side came second and included C Newman in the side.
Soccer
Four College boys were selected for the KZN U19A side which won the Friendship Cup in Johannesburg over the weekend, winning all eight of their games.

Waterpolo
The College U16A side took part in the DHS Water polo tournament during the holidays and finished in 12th position. The 1st team took part in the Clifton Festival finishing in 15th place.
