2022 Speech Day and Valedictory Service

Celebrating Leadership & Academic Excellence

On Thursday 13 October, our Class of 2022 ceased to be College boys and became College “Old Boys” as they were formally inducted into the Maritzburg College Old Boys’ Association. Valedictorian of the Class of 2022, Zibusiso Shongwe, gave a moving tribute to his fellow peers and to the school, highlighting what the five year journey and College’s brotherhood mean to them.

Friday 14 October was another step in closing off their five year College journey, with the School holding it’s annual Speech Day and Valedictory Service recognising leadership and outstanding academic achievements by our 6th formers.

In his address to the boys, College’s headmaster, Mr Chris Luman, drew from Sean Covey’s “7 Habits for Highly Effective Teens”, namely; be proactive, begin with end in mind, put first things first, think win/win, seek first to understand then to be understood, synergise and co-operate, and always sharpen the sword (review and renew).

The Guest of Honour at the Speech Day was Dr Erna de Lange, KZN CEO of the Governing Body Foundation, who delivered a humerous message of advice to both parents and boys, with a reminder to strive for independence which equals freedom.

Sphephelo Mbonambi, one of College’s Deputy Head Prefects, gave a speech in which he reminded his peers of what it means to be a College boy and the five year journey they have walked together.  He thanked all the College staff for what they have done for the Class of 2022, and encouraged the incoming matrics of 2023 to strive to always challenge their limits and give their all.

In addition to the various subject prizes, a number of special prizes were to those young men who, in their final year of school, have truly excelled. Special congratulations goes to our Dux for 2022, Thaufiq Abramia, who received the FNB Prize and the Levinsohn Trophy for the Dux of Maritzburg College, as well as a merit certificate and the prize for English. Second in 6th form was Uwais Essa, who was awarded the Nedbank Proxime Accessit prize as well as a merit certificate, the PWC Prize for Accounting, and prizes for Life Sciences and Life Orientation. Yaaseen Malani received the Colenbrander Accountants Prize for 3rd in form as well as a merit certificate, and prizes for Information Technology and Physical Science.

Also among the top prize winners were Khanyisani Mthimkhulu who received the Maritzburg College Old Boys’ Association Prize for Service to the School as well as a merit certificate, prizes for History & isiZulu, the Olley Prize for History and English and the Nora Cook Trophy for Altruistic Service. Fellow Deputy Head Prefect, Minenhle Ngubo, was awarded the Maritzburg College Old Boys’ Association Prize for Service to the School as well as a merit certificate and the Charles Taylor Award for Good Fellowship. In a clear validation of his leadership, talent and hard work, Ross Finnie was awarded the Mike Brown Five Pillars Award for exceptional achievement in academics, leadership, sport, culture and service.

Well done to all the Class of 2022 – these are young men of stature who can go forward with pride and courage, knowing that their time at Maritzburg College has prepared them well for wherever their lives take them.
