Far from the Dance – 100 years, 100 tests, backstory to a dramatic rivalry
Around 150 guests recently enjoyed some fine dining in the Victoria Hall while listening to master storyteller, Michael Charton share his story “Far from the Dance”.
Having qualified as a chartered accountant in 2004, Michael embarked on a traditional financial career. However, his enthusiasm for the history of South Africa would gradually lure him away from the corporate world. Specifically, Michael came to believe that the craft of historical storytelling has the potential to transform the often divisive story of our past into a source of unity and human connection. In 2015, Michael founded Inherit South Africa, and the next year, released “My Father’s Coat,” a story offering a fresh, human perspective on South African history.
“Far from the Dance” is another tale from his collection; a fascinating tale of the Springboks vs All Blacks rugby history – “two lands, bound together by their shared passion for rugby and yet divided by our politics.” Michael’s story is not a dry list of statistics and numbers, but rather a skillfully woven tale, enhanced through photos and music, introducing a wide-ranging collection of characters over the 100 years, many of whom, are proud Old Collegians.
With the evening having begun with the unveiling of the Philip Nel Pavilion on Goldstones, in honour of College’s head prefect and 1st XV captain of 1921, and captain of the 1937 “Greatest Springboks”, it was fitting that Philip played a leading role in the story, much to the enjoyment of the wider Nel family who attended the evening.
