 Overview Sporting Achievements

Extremely hot conditions were the pattern for the day for College’s first summer fixtures of 2023, with cricket, basketball and water polo teams in action against Westville while the canoe teams continued their preparation for the upcoming Dusi canoe marathon. .

Cricket

College fielded 16 teams against Westville Boys High, winning six of their matches, with the 2nd XI, 4th XI, U16B, U15B & C and the U14C securing good wins.

1st XI match report (Mr Robbie Coutts – 1st XI Coach)

The Westville captain won the toss on the Goldstones and had no hesitation in electing to bat on a hot Pietermaritzburg morning. The wicket was dry and looked like it would get lower and slower as the day progressed.

College started well and a mix of good bowling and poor shot selection never allowed the Westville batsman to settle, the visiting team were unable to put together any significant partnerships.  The most important partnership of the day being 64 for the 7th wicket, the pair giving their team something to defend. The best of the bowlers was leg spinner Chad mason who bowled his 10 overs for 22, picking up 3 wickets. Westville all out for 168 in the 50th over.

College started well and lost their first wicket on 26 in the 4th over, Creedon Smith bowled for 11. Captain Bryn Brokensha and opener Liam Armstrong put on 39 for the 3rd wicket, although a bit slow, the game was still very much in College’s favour at 87 for 3 off 28 overs.  Westville continued to apply pressure through dot balls, a 35 run partnership for the 5th wicket between Rhett Quin and Oliver Da Costa ensured College were still well in the game, Quin’s runout changed the game. College going from 142 for 5 in 42 overs to 152 all out, giving Westville a 15 run win.

Basketball

This weekend saw College take on Westville for a full round of basketball matches with 24 teams in action. The two schools were evenly matched and with College winning 12 of their 23 matches and losing 11.

Our 1st team secured a great 91-67 win – well done boys! And special congratulations to the U14A side playing in their first match for College, and winning 24-15.

1st team report (Nonkululeko Gumede)

It was a glorious start to the season for Maritzburg College Basketball. The 1st team tasted the sweet smell of victory against a confident Westville Boys’ 1st team. Westville started the game confidently scoring the first two points against the nervous boys of the red black white. College quickly gained the upper hand thanks to the indomitable support of the College boys whose faith and love for their team was evidently contagious as the scoreboard ruled in College’s favour. The 3rd quarter saw Westville fighting back with a number of three-point shots however, Ashar Ngcobo’s dribbling skills and Wanda Dlamini’s clean jump shot deemed Westville’s fight futile. In the 4th quarter, Unathi Masinga hit the final nail in Westville’s coffin with a three-point shot at the final buzzer, giving College the win at 91 -67.
