Assembly 30 January 2023

Theme: SETTING GOALS & CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAMME

From Scripture:

“ For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans”  – Jeremiah 29 v 11

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him,and he will make your paths straight.” – Proverbs 3:5-6

A Prayer

Dear Lord we ask that you will guide us and bless us on our journey to achieving  our goals.

Rugby Ball presentation

An 86-year-old rugby ball returns home…
Maritzburg College received a very special gift this week – the leather rugby ball used in the 1937 3rd and final test between the Springboks and the All Blacks at Eden Park in Auckland.
Maritzburg College’s link to the famous match is through Philip Nel, College’s head prefect of 1921, and captain of that 1937 Springbok team, arguably known as the “Greatest Springboks”.
The two teams were level pegging on one test each, with all to play for. The Springboks duly won that all-important test, 17-6, in Auckland in front of 55 000 New Zealanders, and with it the test series.

After some significant detective work, the ball was located, and we welcomed Ian Cairns of the Class of 1968 who travelled from Auckland, to return and present it to the headmaster and Bruce Lesur, from the Old Boys’ Association executive – a very special gift in this our 160th year.

WEEKLY MESSAGE: GOALS

Thought for the week:“Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible” – Tony Robbins

  1. What is a definition of goal?

A goal is an aim or objective or target that you are trying to reach or achieve with effort and determination.

  1. Why is it important to have goals ?
  • Goals help to provide focus
  • Goals allow you to measure progress
  • Goals help you to stay motivated
  • Goals help you to beat procrastination
  • Goals help you to achieve more
  • Goals help you to determine what you want in life ultimately

However, a work-life balance i.e. personal, family and health is essential and goals need to be SMART.

  1. Goals need to be SMART

S              Specific
M            Measurable
A             Achievable
R             Relevant
T              Timed

  1. Why do we need SMART goals?
  • Setting SMART objectives keeps the project moving forward,
  • helps with accountability and timing,
  • and lets you know that you are accomplishing what you set out to accomplish.
