Assembly 20 February 2023

ASSEMBLY: INTEGRITY

From Scripture:

‘Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out.’ – Proverbs 10:9

‘Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is crooked in his ways.’ – Proverbs 28:6

‘The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.’ – Proverbs 11:3

‘The righteous who walks in his integrity— blessed are his children after him!’ – Proverbs 20:7

A Prayer:

Lord, grant us the peace of mind that you are always there for us, to help us make sound decisions in all that we do with your guidance and blessing. Amen

NEW BOYS’ PLEDGE

Several 3rd-5th form new boys joined College this year. After a few weeks of settling in, they marked their admission to the College brotherhood by taking the “College Credo”, which is a sacred pledge to live out the values of a Collegian and of our old and noble school.

“Do you, as a new scholar at Maritzburg College, vow –

  • To live out the Core Values of the school and its #CollegeCulture.
  • To always remain loyal and true to your school and your “band of brothers”.
  • To live out the school’s Core Traditions of –
  • A College boy is loyal to his family, his friends, his school and his country.
  • A College boy does not lie, steal or cheat.
  • A College boy thinks of others first.
  • A College boy always gives of his best and never gives up.
  • A College boy is respectful to and of others.
  • A College boy always owns up.
  • A College boy is always immaculately turned out and displays good manners at all times.”

The boys replied with a resounding “WE DO!”

Theme: Integrity

Last week I spoke to you about HONESTY – the first of our Core Values. Today I would like to talk to you about another core value that of INTEGRITY.

Thought for the Week

“It is when what you say does not match what you do that those around you will question whether the word integrity can apply to you in any way.”

What do we understand by the term ‘INTEGRITY’?

This is a core value which refers to the quality of a person’s character.

It can also be defined as ‘Doing the right thing when no one is watching

This aligns with Oprah Winfrey’s comments on integrity – “Real integrity is doing the right thing , knowing that nobody is going to know whether you did it or not.”

People who ‘have integrity’ act according to their values, beliefs and principles.

Integrity is the virtue of practicing what one preaches or more importantly what one believes is right

The word “integrity” stems from the Latin adjective integer (whole, complete).[2] In this context,

Integrity is the inner sense of “wholeness” deriving from qualities such as honesty and consistency of character. As such, one may judge that others “have integrity” to the extent that they act according to the values, beliefs and principles they claim to hold.

Integrity is the virtue of practicing what one preaches. Or more importantly, practicing what one believes is right.

A ‘man of principle’ is not a man who understands a principle, but a man who understands, accepts, and lives by a principle. There are many reasons why integrity is a virtue.

  1. The first and most important reason to practice one’s beliefs, is that if they are right, you will be benefiting your own life.
  2. The second reason to practice integrity, is that it is an affirmation that your ideas benefit your life.
  3. A third reason to practice integrity is in dealing with others. A man who practices what he preaches is predictable, and few will feel threatened by it. Trust can develop, since others will come to realize you are consistently virtuous.

To act without integrity, even occasionally, will leave others distrustful. This can negatively impact one’s life in a number of ways. People won’t allow themselves to become emotionally close to you. They will fear that you may betray them.

Knowing when to walk away is WISDOM
Being able to do the right thing takes COURAGE
Walking away, with your head held high is DIGNITY
So. at all times strive to act with INTEGRITY.
