College’s Senior Deputy Headmaster, Mr Matthew Marwick paid tribute to Mr Leslie Howard-Brown
It’s my honour this morning to say a few words of tribute about Mr Leslie Howard-Browne, the two-time President of the Old Boys’ Association, former Chairman of the School Governing Body and founder Chairman of the Goldstones Club, who died last Wednesday aged 91.
A physically big and bold man, Mr Howard-Brown loved Maritzburg College like few others, and throughout his long life, until his very last breath, he remained a truly devoted son of this place.
In his Sixth Form year at College, in 1949, he earned selection at lock for the Natal Schools rugby team – these days, the KZN Schools team – and I know that it was one of his great pleasures in life that his old coach, Mr Skonk Nicholson, in later life became one of his longest and dearest friends.
It was right and proper that six years ago the foyer in the Kent Pavilion was named the Leslie Howard-Browne Room – a most deserving accolade.
We give thanks for the long and distinguished life of Mr Howard-Browne, and his service over many decades to Maritzburg College, its Old Boys’ Association, the Goldstones Club, and the broader College community.
We send our sincere condolences to his wife, Esther, their Old Collegian sons Peter and Mark, their daughter, Debbie, and the broader Howard-Browne family.
Let us all stand and observe a few moments’ silence in honour of this great stalwart of our school.
