ASSEMBLY: WELLNESS AND WELLBEING

From Scripture:

“Praise the Lord, my soul and forget not all his benefits ,who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases , who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion’ – Psalms 103:2-4

‘The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy, l came that they may have life and have it in abundance’ – John 10:10

A Prayer:

“Lord, we need the strength that only you can give us. I pray that your power will flow in and through us and with your help we will overcome and be victorious. Amen’

The Gospel Choir delivered a special performance for the staff and boys.

Today’s Quote: “A healthy outside starts from the inside.” – Robert Urich

WHAT IS WELLNESS?

“Wellness is the act of practicing healthy habits on a daily basis to attain better physical and mental health outcomes, so that instead of just surviving, you’re thriving.”

EIGHT DIMENSIONS OF WELLNESS

Research indicates that we need to focus on all eight dimensions of wellness to truly flourish. In addressing the boys, Mr Luman focused on six of these.

There does not have to be a balance among all dimensions. Instead, the goal is to find a personal harmony with the dimensions that is most authentic for you. You cannot get there passively: it requires active awareness, acceptance and commitment.

  1. MENTAL/EMOTIONAL
  • Keep a positive attitude.
  • Be sensitive to your feelings and the feelings of others.
  • Learn to cope with stress.
  • Be realistic about your expectations and time.

  1. SOCIAL
  • Developing a sense of connection,
  • belonging, and a
  • well-developed support system.

  1. INTELLECTUAL

Recognizing ways to expand knowledge and skills through intellectually stimulating activities.

  • Learn because you want to.
  • Apply what you learn in the classroom to real life situations.
  • Participate in research
  • Attend workshops

  1. PHYSICAL
  • Recognizing the need for physical activity, healthy foods, and enough sleep.

  1. SPIRITUAL
  • Attending to our sense of purpose and meaning in life.
  • Be open to different cultures and religions.
  • Define personal values and ethics and make decisions that complement them.
  • Spend time alone in personal reflection.
  • Be in the ‘here and now.’

  1. ENVIRONMENTAL

Occupying pleasant, stimulating environments that support well-being.

  • Keep your room or dorm clean.
  • Find a favourite study spot – not always possible for boarders

The other two are occupational or vocational and financial. Obviously both could affect your well- being and happiness, and therefore your choice of career or vocation is crucial

WELLBEING

Wellbeing is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as “the state of being comfortable, healthy, or happy.”

Wellbeing is not just the absence of disease or illness. It’s a complex combination of a person’s physical, mental, emotional and social health factors. Wellbeing is strongly linked to happiness and life satisfaction. In short, wellbeing could be described as how you feel about yourself and your life.

WELLNESS and WELLBEING are very closely connected

How can you improve your wellbeing?

  • Relax and reduce stress. Find ways to relax. …
  • Find ways to learn and be creative. Try doing something creative. …
  • Spend time in nature. Try to spend some time outdoors. …
  • Connect with others. …
  • Look after your physical health. ..
  • Try to get enough sleep.

The most important pillar to wellbeing is to Connect. There is strong evidence that indicates that feeling close to, and valued by, other people is a fundamental human need and one that contributes to functioning well in the world.

 SCHOOL MATTERS

Mr Sparrow presented an overview from recent surveys by the boys

  • From previous surveys, the worse bullying in this school is peer on peer and in the form of verbal put downs , ridicule [mocking ].
  • Wellness – 81% felt a sense of belonging at College which is very reassuring
  • It is very important to take these surveys seriously, so that we can help you to be the best that you can be

Mr Marwick, addressed the boys on recent theft issues in the school. A letter on this has been sent to all parents.
