Sporting results: Easter Festivals

Overview Sporting Achievements

The Easter holiday week saw Maritzburg College’s rugby and hockey teams take part in several festivals and tournaments around the country. In addition, our tennis team travelled to St Stithian’s and the 1st Golf team took part in the Affies festival. On the Athletics front, two of our boys achieved bronze awards at the South African Schools Athletics Championship.

 

Rugby

All of College’s A teams were in action over the holiday, and produced excellent results winning 15 of the 17 matches, and only losing to Grey College. The U16A, U15A and U14A sides were unbeaten, and these are all very promising results which bode well for the season ahead.

Skonk Nicholson Festival

The U14A and U16A teams participated in the Skonk Nicholson festival hosted by College in which 21 schools from around the country took part. This was a very successful event, and saw both College teams win all of their games.

Francois Swart Festival

College’s U15A team travelled to Affies for the Francois Swart Festival where they won all three of their matches.

Noord-Suid Tournament

College’s 1st and 2nd XV teams took part in the Noord-Suid Rugby Tournament hosted by Affies, where they played against Noordheuwel and Grey College.

St John’s Easter Rugby Festival

The 1st XV then travelled to St John’s to take part in the their E aster rugby festival for the first time. The team did extremely well, playing with courage, determination and commitment, which saw them win all three of their games.

Hockey

College’s U14A, U16A and 1st teams took part in the Nomads festivals, while the U14B team participated in the Ken Florins Festival. The 1st XI also participated in St Stithian’s Festival.

Overall College played 30 games, winning 13 drawing 7 and losing 10

Athletics

A number of our boys represented the KZN province at the South African Schools Athletics Championship. Congratulations to J Sweetnam who won bronze in boys under 20 ShotPut and I Kayembe who won bronze in the 100m boys under 20.

 

Golf

Our golfers attended the Affies Golf Festival and ended 11th out of 12 teams beating Clifton on the final day.

 

Tennis

College’s tennis team travelled to St Stithian’s – and although they lost a number of their games, there were some outstanding individual performances:

Samuel Dean v St David’s won 8-4 and 8-3
Gerhard Rouz v Clifton won 8-7
Thomas Mason v Clifton won 8-4

Congratulations to Adam Tilbury who finished 19th in South Africa at the Growthpoint TSA Junior Nationals.
