Assembly 13 May

THEME: REUNION & WHAT IS A GOOD MAN?

From Scripture:

Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love. – 1 Corinthians 16:13-14

Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity and honesty. – Titus 2:7

But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. – Timothy 6:11

A prayer:

‘Lord, grant us the peace of mind that you are always there for us, to guide us to be good to great men with  your guidance and blessing.

Theme for the Week: WHAT IS YOUR IDEA OF A ‘GOOD MAN’?

This will be discussed during the mentor periods this week.

Thought for the Week

“The good man is the man who, no matter how morally unworthy he has been, is moving to become better.” – John Dewey

COMMENTS OF REUNION

Last week we focused on brotherhood, and more specifically what is the unique College RED, BLACK and WHITE brotherhood.

Over the past few days we have seen this incredible brotherhood in action as literally hundreds of OCs returned to their alma mater,  to reminisce on days gone by,  but most importantly to reconnect face to face and experience that unique College brotherhood in person.

There were a huge number of activities for the OCs which included sporting activities v the old school, the Reunion Assembly, Reunion Dinner, Memorial Chapel Service, Memorial Wall unveilings, and a Reunion Lunch, culminating in the outstanding 160th BLAZER DISPLAY and equally outstanding performances on the playing fields. Iit was evident in the games watched that you had taken Mr Bredenkamp’s words literally in striving to be the best that you can be and to never give up!

Whilst those directly involved in the sports matches will remember those results for many years to come,  the most endearing memory for the majority  of you and especially the 6th form , will be the BLAZER DISPLAY and the incredible support from 1260 boys on Basher Ridge right through to the end of the 1st XV game. The enthusiasm and passion of the shouting captains was infectious and never faltered, and the challenges from OCs 2013 and others were gladly received and responded to in volume.

We asked for you to be welcoming, respectful and humble in receiving our OCS back to their alma mater and to play to your full potential in all that you do, and you certainly raised the bar and responded magnificently. From the singing of the choir, to the toe-tapping  jazz band, to sincere speeches, a passionate war cry at the dinner, participation on the fields –  you did yourselves and your school proud.

May I thank you on behalf of the OCs, parents, staff and all the supporters . As a result of your incredible commitment the OC President and EXCO have sponsored a morning tea treat for you and the staff on Wednesday.

Please join me in congratulating our whole school on the superb manner in which we received our OCS back to their beloved Barns’, Pape’s, Goldstone’s, Bashers Ridge and the Kent Pavilion.

SPORT

Our sporting results this weekend were exceptional across the teams and code. It could not have been a happier ending to Maritzburg College’s 2023 Reunion Day celebrations – a very convincing 27-8 win for the 1st XV against rivals Westville Boys’ High. The added bonus of a clean sweep of rugby results against Westville; 20 wins from 21 games and one draw, ensured the celebrations were even greater.  The hockey matches against Westville were a different story with several very closely fought contests; College winning seven of their 15 matches, drawing four and losing four. The Red Army 1st XI played to a packed crowd of a supporters on Pape’s Astro in a nail-biting match that ended with a 2-2 draw.

There were also good results for our chess, cross country, cycling, debating and squash teams.

Full details are here.
