Overview Sporting Achievements
Congratulations to Maritzburg College’s R Lottering and T Truter, who have been selected for the SA National team to represent South Africa at the 9th World Junior Championships taking place in Israel from 6-10 September. This is the most prestigious junior swimming event in the world, where only the best compete! We are very proud of the boys for their selection, which is both recognition and reward of many months of training and commitment. Ricky has qualified in four events; 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 100 fly, 400 freestyle, and Tom has qualified in two events; 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke.
College is also very proud of the four boys selected for the SA U18 team following the recent basketball interprovincial tournament held in Bloemfontein; I Masinga, A Ngcobo, R Hoskins and K Simbankhulu. Maritzburg College had four boys representing KZN and one representing EC at the IPTs – where KZN finished second, losing to GP by 4 points. College has the most players in the U18 squad in South Africa – well done boys, we are very proud of your achievements!
The June July holiday saw a number of College boys participate in a range of provincial and national sporting events, and achieving excellent results. These included the Kloof soccer tournament, Craven week, Academy week, Grant Khomo week and Rhino week rugby tournaments, hockey interprovincial tournaments, squash, golf, volleyball, canoeing, cycling and chess.
Soccer
College 1st XI participated in the Kloof soccer tournament which took place between 24 – 26 June. They did very well in the pool matches, but unfortunately lost to Louis Botha in the quarter final, finishing in 5th place overall.

Rugby
Twenty eight College boys were selected for the U15, U16, Academy and Craven week tournaments, doing their school and province proud with a number of them being selected for the national teams.
U15 Rhino Week
Three College u15 boys represented the Sharks at the u15 Rhino Week; O Kosani, E Mpapa and R Stanton, who camptained the team. They had a fantastic week winning all the games, beating the Valke, and Limpopo, and then the Bulls in the final.
Grant Khomo Week 2023
At the U16 Grant Khomo week held in Boland, three College boys represented the Sharks; C Cherayi, M Vyambwera and L Sinkfontein. There were mixed fortunes for the team who lost to the Blue Bulls and WP but beat SWD. A special congratulations to C Cherayi who was selected for the team of the tournament.
Academy Week 2023
At the Academy U18 rugby tournament, five College boys were selected to represent their province; J Jansen, B Maphisa, L Makhatini, S Mbatha and N Sithole. J Jansen was later promoted to the Craven week U18 team. Congratulations to Mr Elder, who was selected as the backline coach of the Academy team. The Sharks beat Boland, but lost to the Lions and the Griffons.
Craven Week 2023
College had an outstanding seven boys selected for the flagship Youth Week Tournament of SA Rugby, the u18 Craven Week; P Khubeka, S Kadira, L Kunene, E Mouton, A Botha, K Mthimkhulu and J Jansen. Unfortunately, Mthimkhulu broke his leg prior to the week and couldn’t attend. Congratulations to Mr Orchard who was selected as the Forwards Coach of the Craven Week team.
A special congratulations to P Khubeka and L Kunene were also selected to represent the SA Schools team – a magnificent achievement!
At the tournament, the Sharks beat WP XV, but lost to WP and EP sides.
Hockey
College had five players in the U18A and eight in the U18B side taking part in the U18 Nationals held in Bloemfontein. The U18A finished 6th place overall, while the U18B, captained by A Zuma finished in 12th. Well done to N Holmes was selected for the SA u17 squad, and to A Khumalo who finished the tournament with 5 goals overall.
An outstanding nine College boys were selected for the U16A side and a further eight for the U16B side at the U16 Nationals held in Bloemfontein
The U16A captained by D Jackson had a great tournament, finishing with a silver medal in 2nd place. The U16B team did very well to end in 9th place in A section. Congratulations to S Sithembu and D Jackson who were selected for the SA u16A squad, and K Jenkins and B Thornton-Dibb, who made the SA u16B squad.
Five College boys were also selected to take part in the U14 Northern Regional Tournament held in Johannesburg, where the U14A finished 3rd winning a bronze medal, and the U14B finished 5th. Overall 34 of College’s hockey boys competed at various tournaments and five were selected for higher honours.
Canoeing
At the KZN Surfski King of the Bay champs, College’s K Vogt won the U16 and U18 events with J Worthmann winning the U14 event.
Squash
Two College boys, B Mahaye and S Johnson represented KZN at the U14 interprovincial squash tournament held in Johannesburg. The KZN team finished in 3rd (bronze) place, in the A division. College’s Mr Alan McGuigan managed the KZN U14 side.
There were also two College boys in the KZN U16B team, V Premchund and T Kufal, which finished 2nd winning silver in the B section. College’s T Nana was part of the KZN U16A team which finished 7th overall in the A section.
T Pratt was part of the KZN U19A team which ended in 5th place in the A section while W Galliers represented KZN in the U19B team which finished 3rd (bronze medal) in the B section.
Golf
The Maritzburg College Golf team participated in a number of KZN junior tournaments that took place on the South Coast during the holidays, and secured a number of top positions.
Summary of results:
L Akerman won the Victoria Country Club (VCC) event, and finished 2nd at both the Kloof and Southbroom tournaments.
J Truter finished in 2nd position at Selborne , 3rd at Zimbali, 3rd at the VCC and 4th at Kloof.
F Pillay was 3rd overall at the Margate junior tournament.
Chess
Four College boys, M Karrim (U18) and S Maharaj, K Moodley, and L Naicker (U15) participated at the uMgungundlovu district chess selections held at Heather High S, where three were selected to compete in the KZN tournament representing the district. The boys were Karrim, Maharaj and Naicker. Unfortunately, Karrim could not make it but Naicker and Maharaj went on to compete giving very good performances.
Cycling
College has two cyclists competing in the SA XCO Mountain Bike event in Parys, L Newlands who placed 11th and B Foster who finished 23rd.
A further three cyclists competed in the Cascades Provincial XCO Mountain Bike event held in PMB; with K Searle finishing 3rd, C Sellick 5th and B Foster 7th in their respective age categories.
Volleyball
The U17 KZN provincial volleyball selections took place in Durban, with five College Boys making up the team of eight that represented the Umgungundlovu district; D Naidoo, J Samuel, J Murekezi, R van Der Merwe and J Mumford. D Naidoo was appointed as captain of the district team. At the Provincial tournament, Umgungundlovu won 2 matches and lost 1. Two College boys were selected for the 24-man shadow squad; J Samuel and J Murekezi, with Murekezi making the final top 12 KZN players and earning provincial colours. The KZN team finished in 4th position. Congratulations to Mr Budhoo who was selected as a ref at the prestigious tournament.
