A letter sent to the Headmaster, Mr Chris Luman by a parent from Affies, following the exchange weekend of 21-22 July 2023.
“We had the privilege to host 9 young men from Maritzburg College this weekend, who took part in the Maritzburg / Affies interschools.
I cannot remember when last I felt so excited about our future in this wonderful country. From the moment these young men stepped into our house, we were humbled by their manners, sense of humour, general knowledge – and respect.
They tried their absolute best to speak Afrikaans to us – and I must say, they succeeded. The Afrikaans teachers must be so proud of what they have achieved. The word “fantasties” was used a number of times.
The boys that we hosted are all part of the music department. Needless to say, our house was filled with the most beautiful sounds for a few hours. Mr Simon Stickells and Mr Jacques Heyns can be applauded for the culture and legacy that they have created.
On a very cold Friday evening next to a bushveld braai, we laughed until we cried, tried to solve a few political problems, and got excited about the years ahead.
They quickly became part of the family support structure, as they took it upon themselves to give advice to our 13-year-old daughter regarding her romantic challenges.
I will forever remember this weekend.
We applaud you, the teachers, and these childrens’ parents for creating these exceptional young gentlemen.
Seth, Zethn, Samkelo, Sikuwe, Judah, Sameer, Daniel, Ethan and Zwane will always be welcome in our house.
Pro aris et focis / Laat daar lig wees.
We are exceptionally proud of these young men who epitomise everything we strive to build and nurture at College – well done gents!
