What is College Youth Council (CYC)?
A council of learners with the official mission statement of Raising Awareness Through Education, the College Youth Council strives to ensure that the environment at Maritzburg College is one that is conducive to every type of person, both in our College community as well as outside, and ensure that Maritzburg College produces upstanding members of society.
Why is CYC important?
In this rapidly evolving world, social issues have become more pressing than ever before. Our society must adapt, and so must our leaders of tomorrow. The College Youth Council, previously known as Social Awareness Forum, was born out of the vision to create a cohesive environment where our young gentlemen can not only develop their leadership skills but also actively contribute to addressing and resolving social challenges that impact our communities.
This society is not just another extracurricular activity; it is a platform that encourages our students to become catalysts for positive change.
The core mission of this society is threefold:
Social Awareness: We believe that awareness is the first step towards change. Our society will strive to raise awareness about a wide range of social issues affecting our society today. From environmental sustainability to gender equality, to mental health and poverty alleviation. We will engage in meaningful discussions and awareness campaigns to broaden our perspectives and deepen our understanding.
Empowerment through Action: We firmly believe that education and knowledge should be put into action. With that principle in mind, we will actively organize and participate in community service projects. This will allow our members to make a tangible impact in the lives of others and develop a sense of compassion and empathy that is essential for true leadership.
Leadership Development: Leadership is not just about making decisions; it’s about inspiring others to join the journey towards a better world. Through workshops, mentorship programs, and team-building activities, we will nurture the leadership potential within each of our members. Our goal is to create well-rounded leaders who possess not only strong academic abilities but also the emotional intelligence and resilience needed to navigate the challenges of life.
In essence, The College Youth Council aims to empower our young men to become advocates for change, champions of social justice, and ambassadors of unity. Together, we will foster an inclusive and supportive environment where everyone’s voice is heard, valued, and respected.
Topics to be covered
Within our society’s nurturing embrace, we cover a broad spectrum of essential subjects, including stress management and mental health, understanding the complexity of Artificial Intelligence, combating addiction, and the impact of pornography on our lives. Moreover, we address the critical concerns of poverty and unhoused individuals, championing civil rights and fighting against racial discrimination, striving for gender equality and equity, and addressing the sensitive issue of childhood eating disorders.
