Overview Sporting Achievements

Maritzburg College hosted the Nashua Midlands Rugby Sevens tournament on Saturday, which saw 10 school teams compete in U18 and U15 pools. Maritzburg College’s teams secured a place in both finals with the U15 team winning the Cup final against Michaelhouse 26-15, while the U18A team lost narrowly to Northwood 7-10.

College’s 1st XI soccer team added to their exceptional performances this season by winning the FA Pmb cup final against Carter. There were also excellent performances from the College canoeists at the Inter-Schools canoe polo tournament.

Congratulations to College’s Josh Sweetnam for an excellent overall individual performance at the KZN Christian Schools Athletics Championship, receiving the Senior Victor Ludorum award and breaking records in the discus, hammer throw and shot putt events.

 

Rugby Sevens

Ten school teams competed in U18 and U15 pools of the Nashua Midlands Rugby Sevens tournament hosted at Maritzburg College. The U15 and U18A teams both secured places in the finals with the U15 team winning the Cup final against Michaelhouse 26-15, while U18 team lost narrowly to Northwood 7-10.

Soccer

This weekend College’s 1st soccer team competed in the PMB & Midlands FA Cup. College won all of their five matches, progressing through to the semi-final against Alex which they won 5-1, and then to the final against Carter which they won 3-2 – and are the FA Cup Champions for 2023!

On top of the fantastic tournament win, congratulations to CJ Sukraj who was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament and to Grayson Mentory for being named Top Goalscorer. Grayson missed out on equalling Ryan Moon’s tournament record by one goal but still notched up an impressive 7 goals, including 4 in the tournament opener vs St Nicholas.

Well done to College’s A team who took top spot at the Inter-Schools canoe polo tournament, while the College B team finished in 2nd place.
