Overview Sporting Achievements

For their final fixtures of the season, College’s soccer teams played Northwood in Durban. They won six of their games, drawing three and losing five.  Sadly, it was not to be a final victory against the Knights for the 1st XI, who lost 2-3, bringing to an end what has been an outstanding season.

College’s 1st XI cricket side played a friendly warm-up match against DHS also in Durban, winning their match by 112 runs after some excellent individual batting and bowling performances.

Congratulations to two College boys, Lethokuhle Shangase and Riley Kleinhans, who together with staff member, Brandon de Lange (OC 2014), took part in the Rhino Peak Challenge (RPC) this weekend. A very challenging trail run of 21 km, summiting Rhino Peak (3056m), the event also aims to raise funds for the conservation of rhinos, endangered animals, and vultures along with other conservation projects. Lethokuhle Shangase was the 4th school boy home – an excellent result!

Cricket

Congratulations to College’s 1st XI cricket team who took on DHS down in Durban. This was a warm-up friendly 50-over match with both teams fielding 13 or 14 players to get the time in the middle.

1st XI report (Mr Robbie Coutts – Coach)

The Maritzburg College 1st XI travelled to Durban on Saturday morning to take on DHS in friendly match before the start of the summer sports fixtures.

College captain Bryn Brokensha won the toss and elected to bat first on a warm clear morning.

The opening pair of Caleb Thomas and Liam Armstrong batted well on a pitch that proved to be slower than  anticipated. College found themselves at 65 for 3 at the first drinks break, with Chad Mason and Michael Gibson at the crease. The pair batted well to tea, and good running between the wickets and hitting the loose deliveries to the boundary, got College to the break without any further loss. The pair continued after the tea break passing the 100 partnership. Gibson was the first to get to 50, Mason followed shortly, ending up with the team’s top score of 62. College used up all 50 overs, ending up with a total of 236 for 9.

Captain Brokensha broke the DHS opening partnership, with a clean bowl and the rest of the College bowlers never allowed the DHS batsman to settle, taking wickets at regular occasions. The biggest partnership of the day was for the 10th wicket, that of 29. Wickets were shared between Oliver da Costa, Sphamandla Dzanibe and Matthew Thomson picking up 2 wickets each. DHS were bowled out for 125 giving College victory by 111 runs.
