On Friday 14 October, the Class of 2023 celebrated another step in closing off their five-year College journey, with the School’s annual Speech Day and Valedictory Service recognising outstanding academic achievements by our 6th formers.
In his address to the boys, College’s headmaster, Mr Chris Luman, spoke to the true meaning of Success, and what it means to be successful. Guest of Honour was Mr Wilhelm de Wet, a talented sportsman and top academic in his schooling years, and currently an actuary and founder of the Actuarial Recruitment Business, SA3, the top actuarial recruitment firm in South Africa. Mr de Wet shared the inspirational story of the Jakes Gerwel Technical School and Bonnievale – a community-drive education solution, that has not only transformed the local community but has given hope to countless other communities across South Africa.
In addition to the various subject prizes, a number of special prizes are awarded by Maritzburg College to those young men who, in their final year of school, have truly excelled. Special congratulations goes to our Dux for 2023, Declan Pillay, who received the FNB Prize and the Levinsohn Trophy for the Dux of Maritzburg College, as well as a merit certificate, the Epoch Optima prize for Further Studies in Mathematics, the PWC prize for Accounting and the prizes for Afrikaans and Physical Science. Second in 6th form was Tayughe Ramdhass, who was awarded the Nedbank Proxime Accessit prize as well as a merit certificate, the Olley prize for History and English, and the prize for English. Matthew van Rooyen received the Colenbrander Accountants prize for 3rd in form as well as a merit certificate, and the prize for Business Studies.
Also among the top prize winners were outgoing Head Prefect, Sasha Kadira who received the Phelps-Cannon Prize for Service to the School, and Deputy Head Prefect, Thaseem Ganie who was awarded the Nora Cook Trophy for Altruistic Service. Senior Deputy Head Prefect, Luc du Toit, received the Maritzburg College Old Boys’ Association prize for Service to the School as well as a merit certificate, the KickstART prize for Visual Arts, the Charles Taylor Award for Good Fellowship, the prize for Achievement in Academics and Sport, and the Mike Brown Five Pillars Award.
