A recent new appointment at College is the role of Educational Technologist, a position filled by one of our educators,  Mr Liam Smorfitt. We asked Mr Smorfitt to share some thoughts about his new role, as well as College’s focus on technology in education.

The role and objectives…
As the Educational Technologist at College, my role involves spearheading the integration of technology into the classroom setting. I am responsible for overseeing the implementation of a hybrid system, particularly in the upcoming device rollout for the Grade 8 class of 2024.Primary objectives are to enhance the overall teaching and learning experience through the effective use of technology. By doing so, we aim to foster a dynamic and engaging educational environment, equipping students with essential digital literacy skills for their future endeavours.

Embracing Technology at College…
In the coming months and years, College envisions a comprehensive integration of technology across all facets of the school. This includes not only classrooms but also administrative processes, collaborative projects, and extracurricular activities. The goal is to create a tech-savvy environment that aligns with the evolving needs of both educators and students.

Our 2nd formers of 2024, will, for the first time, be using devices in their learning. College has taken a considered approach to the introduction of devices, and will be implementing a hybrid system. We asked Mr Smorfitt to expand on this…

The introduction of a “hybrid” system at College involves the thoughtful integration of devices into the classroom setting. This approach combines traditional teaching methods with digital tools, ensuring a balanced and effective learning experience. The rollout for the Grade 8 class of 2024 will be carefully planned, with professional development sessions for both teachers and students to ensure a smooth transition.

AI and ChatGPT are very much the IT buzz words of the moment, and we asked Mr Smorfitt to provide insight into College’s approach to these…

College recognizes the importance of emerging technologies, including AI and ChatGPT, in the educational landscape. While we are mindful of their potential, our approach is centred on responsible and ethical use. We see these technologies as tools to enhance learning experiences rather than replace traditional teaching methods. The focus is on leveraging AI to supplement education, providing personalized and adaptive learning opportunities.

In closing…
I would like to highlight College’s commitment to ongoing professional development for our educators to ensure they are well-equipped to leverage technology effectively. We are excited about the possibilities technology brings to education and look forward to creating an innovative and inclusive learning environment for our students.

Thank you Mr Smorfitt, we wish you everything of the best in your important role at College in the future!
