Cricket

There were mixed fortunes for the College cricket teams over the weekend. Although they won 10 of their 14 matches, the 1st XI match see-sawed back and forth on a scorching Goldstones, before the away side eventually secured a 54 run victory.

1st team report (Mr Robbie Coutts, 1st XI Coach)
College’s 1st XI Captain, Chad Mason, lost the toss and the visiting captain elected to bat first on a hot and humid morning.

The decision looked a good one with the St Charles opening pair putting on 81 in 15 overs. The partnership was broken by Ryan McKean, who also picked up the second wicket an over later. College never allowed St Charles to put on any meaningful partnerships, picking up wickets at regular intervals. Off spinner Oliver Da Costa and leg spinner Mason bowled with good control and never let the opposition batsmen settle and limited them to 195 all out in 45 overs. Mason with 3 wickets and Mc Kean with two were the pick of the bowlers.

Llewelyn Sutherland was the first batsmen to be dismissed in the 6th over with the score on 23. Two wickets fell quickly before Daniel Nadasan and Oliver DaCosta steadied the College innings with a 45 run partnership, at tea College were well placed at a 93 for 3, needing 103 runs in 25 overs. Controversially, Nadasan was run out for a well-played 39, the runout started the collapse of the College innings wickets falling at regular intervals. The College middle and lower order once again, struggled to rotate the strike in the middle overs and that ensured the required run rate climbed. College from being well set at tea, collapsed to 141 all out in the 42nd over.

St Charles 195 all out; Mason 3 for 29, McKean 2 for 15
College 141 all out; Nadasan 39, Da Costa 28
St Charles won by 54 runs
