Relationships Assembly Message – Mr Anthony Sparrow

Relationships

From recent research collected from our boys it is clear that many of you have positive relationships that effect your happiness and your success here at school.

Your relationships with your peers, staff at the school and your parents are seen by you as being important in almost all areas of your life. They guide your view of situations you find yourself in, what you see as right and wrong, how you react to certain people, whether you are willing to push through difficult times or not and whether you feel that you belong in a specific space, just to name a few.

Your relationships heavily effect your self-confidence and your sense of worth. All the more reason as to why you need to try and make sure that your relationships are positive ones.

Your friends are possibly the most influential relationships at the moment so….

Friends – Make sure that your friends:

Live with integrity.
If you have friends that are willing to bend and break the rules at every possible opportunity or if they are happy to lie at the drop of a hat to save their own skins then they are not the best type of friends to be around.

You can trust them.
They won’t tell you one thing and then do something else.

They are dependable.
If you ask them to show up for you they do, every time with no excuses.

They are loyal.
They stick with you through highs and lows, not just when things are going well.

They are good listeners.
They are willing to listen to you when you are down and just need to talk to someone.

They are low maintenance.
You do not make you feel bad for being busy and not spending time with them and do not create constant drama around you.

Spending time with them makes you feel good.
When you do spend time with them it makes you feel good. Be careful about what that actually looks like. If you spend time with a friend group and your interactions leave you feeling anything but good it might be time to find another friend group.

Given, friends will never be perfect as you are not perfect, so we cannot expect them to tick every box. But, they must be friends that realize when they have not been great and are willing to admit to this and work on their short comings. Also realize that these characteristics of a good friend is something others should expect of you, it goes both ways.

Friends that are constantly trying to get one up on you, are a constant bad influence and are not willing to admit and work on their faults,   are friends that are most probably harming your health, self-confidence and general well-being as well as your sense of belonging.

You should carefully consider whether these are friendships that you should be continuing with. You all place a great deal of value on the relationships you have. Try and make sure that you have good friends and that you are a good friend in return.
